ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY.
— o A meeting of the Council of tho Wellington Zoological Society was held last night. Tho Rov. J. Crewes presided, and there was a good attendance of members. The following new members were elected:—The Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P; X/uto), Messrs. A. H. Hindmarsh, M.P., \V. H. Hind, T. Fathers, and E. FergUEon. Tiie secretary reported that the picture competition had resulted very satisfactorily, and that for a few days tho pictures would be on view at the rooms of the Academy of Fine Arts. Tim chairman reported that the following birds had .{wen recently presonted by DT through the society:—One flamingo, two European cranes, one rail (supposed to be the only one of its kind in any zoo), a pair of Australian wood swallows, and a trroy bell masrpie. It was decided to accord to the Hon. James Allen a vote of thanks for tho valuable information he had collected for ■the society while in England. It wan arrnnffed that n strong deputation should wait on the Minister for Internal Affairs to submit to. him certain proposals for the preservation .of New Zealand fauna. T!ip treasurer reportfd that provision ■had be?n made for the payment for .all animals that had been received, and also of all outstanding accounts,. He was authorised to anply to th»' council for permission to take un a collection in tho Park fo strengthen t.he society's finances before tho expected tiger arrived.
