Two young women, Clarice Cowell and Elizabeth, Barry were remanded in cus tody on a charge of conspiring to murder a Mrs. King by placing strychnine in lier tea. • The -police evidence showed that Barry called on Mrs. King, representing herself as a friend of the blotter of King. She was asked to have a cup of tea. After the tea had been made, Mrs. King left the room, and on returning 6ipped the beverage. Discerning a peculiar taste, she did not drink it. She' examined it after Barry.tad left, and found it contained sufficient strychnine to kill ten people. • Whon arrested, Barry made a statement that she and Cowell had conspired to poison Mrs. King. ' Powell first denied this, but subsequently oonSrmed Barry's statement, and added that King had cruelly treated and ruined her, and that she wished to get rid of Mrs: King.
