HUTT AND PETONE NEWS, (From Our Special Correspondent.)
PETONE BOWLING CLUB. Tho report which is to be presented at the seventeenth meeting of the Petono Bowling Club on June 20, mentions witli regret the sudden death of llr. J. G. Hopkins, one of the club's activo members. Daring the year 23 new members were enrolled, and five resignations received. The total membership is 102 activo members and five honorary members. During the winter several card tourneys were held. The report expresses thanks to Air. E. .1. Hill lor arrangements in. connection with the promenade ooncert on liny 30. The club was represented in the Wellington Centre tournament by six rinks, and at the Northern Association's by two rinks. Messrs. M'Ewan, Henry, llelhuish, Southgate (s.), and Firth, Smith, Wearne, and Wylie were successful in ties for their respective sections at the Centre tournament. Tho contest for the President's Cup (presented by Dr. Ross and Mr. Orton Stevens) created interest. Two of the contests were played at Lower Hutt, and one at Petone, the latter club being successful in winning two out of threo games. Petone achieved an aggregate of 738 to Lower Hutt's 327. The Championship Singles and Handicap Pairs were keenly contested, and (although successfully carried out under the sectional system) an improvement would bo brought about if only one round was posted at a time, and a stated time given for finishing the posted draw. The Wilford Cup was competed for for the first time, anil was won by Mr. Firth. At present the club aro the holders of the Hill Pins, the successful rink being Messrs. Findlay, "VVearne, Coles, and Beynon. Tho report expresses appreciation of the services rendered by Mr.' W. G. Henry (green superintendent), Mr. M'Callum (caretaker), the Petone Municipal Band, and Mr. E. J. Palmer. The balance-sheet shows receipts as .£212 15s. 2d., and expenditure as .£IBO 133. 4d. Assets in excess of liabilities are totalled at J23G9 Is. Bd. . ST.' DAVID'S CHXJECH. Anniversary services in connection with St. David's Church, Petone, were held yesterday. In the morning the pulpit w»3 occupied by the Rev. J. K. Elliot, of Wellington, whilst in the aftornoon and evening tho Rev. A. Thomson was the , preacher. A feature was the singing of tho children. BAND PERFORMANCE. The Petone Municipal Band (under Lieutenant Herd) played a capital programme on. the local Recreation Ground yesterday afternoon. The collection amounted to X 3 12s. This evening a benefit entertainment will be tendered the band by the "Frivolities, a troupe of performers from Wellington. The entertainment will take place at His Majesty's Theatre. SKATING AT HUTT. Last week tho chief attraction at the Hutt Skating Rink was a novelty entitled "musical squares." This week other attractions of a humorous nature will be introduced. The novices' rooms' are, still well patronised. DEFENCE ACT. A large number of Territorials will appear at the Petono Magistrate's Court on various charges on. Wednesday next.
