MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL.
A mooting of the Makara County Council was held yesterday morning, Mr. F. T. Moore presiding. Councillors J. H. Haggerty, A. J. Taylor, T. H. Eastwood, K. J, Monaghan, and G. Monk were also present. With regard to the incroas9 in. the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board's levy for tho year 1913-14, the chairman reported what had taken place at tho recent conference of local bodies. The council yesterday decided to pay the amount asked for, .£593 15s. 4d.A rate of Jd. in tho £ on tho capital value of tho county was struck. A communication was received from the New '- Zealand Counties' Association intimating that it had .been decided ,to hold & conference of affiliated counties at tho end of July, and asking tho council to forward any remits it had for consideration.
The chairman moved tho following remit:—"That, in order to improve arterial county roads in tho interests of motorists, tli« Counties Act be so amended that a county may levy an annual tax not exceeding ss. per horse-power upon all motor-driven vehicles, the owners of which reside in a county or in any city, borough, or town district within the boundaries of a county." The Temit was carried. The chairman was appointed (a represent tho council at the conference. A petition was received from a mjmbei of residents of East Porirua for the raising of tho road leading thereto, portions of which they stated were, during the winter months, frequently submerged and quite impassable. The council deoided to effect tho necessary repairs.
The sailor who was convicted in the Magistrate's Court on Thursday for drunkenness and for breaking a pane of glass was Charles Edwin Cpllier, and not Wm, Young, as stated. Accused nut his kcee through a plate-elass window at Young's Private Hotel, on Wednesday night, after having been requested to leave. A contraot has been signed for the construction of new tramway workshopsdadiacent to tho tram sheds at Newtown. The new 6tructuro will bo of brick and steel, with the serrated roof of tho usual workshops or store type. Tho successful tenderers were Messrs. Maoe and Nicholson, and tho price 10s. Mr. Harvey Holyoako, of Riwaka, Nelson, a composer of numerous ' pafriotio poems, has received word by a recent mail that ono of his compositions has been placed before his Majesty tho King. Field-Marshal Lord Roberts has also written appreciatively in acknowledgment of a poem forwarded to him by Mr. Holyoako. Tho local wireless station advises that the s.s. Maheno expects to arrivo at Auckland at 2 a.m. on Monday, and tho s.s. Maunganui expects to arrivo at the Bluff at 6 a.m. on Monday. Mr. J. E. Evans, saddler, 158 Lambton Quay (opposite tho Public Trust Offices), has an announcement in this issuo of interest to thoso who are users of travelling trunks.
