NOTES ON A PASSING VOGOE. The passing of tho vogue for spats gives occasion for a eulogy of them marked by deep feeling in the editorial pages of the "Isis," tho undergratuate magazine at Oxford.' "A spat," says the enthusiastio leader-
writer, "is more than, a spat—it is a symbol. And everyone who has worn spats knows it. Directly you put on a pair of Bpats (you mu3t put on a pair, one alone won't do it) a feeling of stability and firmness comes over the soul—that sort of stability and firmness that only a symbol gives. "A man in spata is the little god of the world. We talk of getting on to our feot, but no one can get on to his feet until he has put those feet into spats." Several "spat" epigrams follow. "When you go to interview ft money-lender wear spats; and if he is without them you will get the better of him." "Women, you notice, want to be put on an equality with man (whatevor that means): tliat. is why they bave begun to wear spats."
