THE GREY SEAT.

LIBERALS ALREADY ASTIR. INFORMAL MEETING. '

(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Hokitika, Juno 12. Advantago will bo taken of the presence in Greymouth of several Oppositionists, including Mr. G. Witty (IticcaTton), to select a candidate to contest the Grey seat in the Liberal interest. It is understood that those who arrived this evening held an informal meeting to-night, with tho West Coast members of the Opposition party (Messrs. James Colvin and beddon), and strong efforts are being mado to persuade Mr. M. Hanan to run in the interests of tlio Opposition. Mr. Hanan is Crown Prosecutor, and has a large private practice, but his health has not been very good of late, and it is very problematical whether lie will oonsent to stand, especially in view of tlio fact that his family are ■ unfavourable, chiefly on account of Mr. Hanan's health.

There is a considerablo opinion in Greymouth in favour of requisitioning Mr. H. L. Michel, of Ilokitika, to consent to nomination, and certainly Mr, Michel hns a. largo personal vote in Greymouth favourable to him, while lie is well-known throughout the. const. His political policy is almost identical -with that of tlio present Government's and ho is a strong platform man. Everything, of course, is eonjeoture as yet. , CITY COUNCIL'S SYMPATHY. At tlio meeting of the City Council last night the (Mr. J. I'. Luke) said the Dominion had suffered a great loss by the death of the late Sir Arthur ness, and lie thought tho council should express their sympathy and condolence with the widow. He moved: "That the sympnthy and condolence of this council, and of tlio citizens of Wellington, bo convoyed to Lady Guinness and relatives upon the sad -loss they and the Dominion have suistaincd by tho death of Sir Arthur Guinness, Speaker of the House of Representatives." The motion -was affirmed by the council. THE SPEAKERSHIP. (By Tel'eeraph—Pre«« Association.) Auckland, June 12. Asked if he had anything to say regarding the eloction to fill the vacant Speakership, Mr. F. W. Lang, M.P., said no had nothiiy «t alt to say. H« stated that no communication had passed between liiin and the Government on tho matter. OTHER RESOLUTIONS. At a meeting Wellington Industrial Association, held last ovening; a voto of condolence with Lady Guinness in connection with the death, of her husband. Sir Arthur™ Guinness, was passed, on the motion of tho president (Mr. L. 11. Partridge). The following telegram has been sent to Lady Guinness, Greymouth, by tho presi« dent of the Harbours' Association (Mr. R. Fletcher), on behalf of the associa-tion-.—"Executive of Association desires to convey to you its deepest sympathy in tho aad bereavement you have sustained."
