THE TRAMWAY SYSTEM.
RIVAL ROUTES.
PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION SUGGESTIONS.
A deputation from tlio South Wellington progressive Association was introduced to the City Council last night by Couneillar Barber, to urge several matters upon the council.
The first speaker, Mr. John Castles, said it was tome tlireo years sinco a deputation from South Wellington waited upon the council to press upon them the extension of the tramway system from Constable Street. They wisned again to urge the matter upon the council, as they had heard some talk of an extension along Koy Street, at a cost of i'sooo. _ They asked, that this money might be diverted to tho Constable Street extension, via Wellington Road, io lvilbirnie, for _ which an estimate had been given for £71100. They still'considered that the Constable Street extension was the more important, and would relievo congestion. Other matters also urged were the establishment of a payment offico for tho electric light service in tho Wellington South district, and a better system of rubbish collection. At present there was onlv ouo collection in tho week.
Air. E. J. I'itzgibbon, and Mr. Clarke, president of tho Kilbirnio llatepayers' Association, also spoke. The latter speaker considered tho Constable Street extension would relieve tho congestion much better than tho extension along Roy Street. Air. It. A. Wright asked whether it was corrcct that a tramway could bo taken down on# of the routes for J27000. The Mayor: No, it is not corrcct. Tho City' Engineer intorms me that no report was ever presented setting forth tho prico of this tramway at The Mayor, replying generally to tho deputation, said that tho council had decided that it was necessary to take visitors to the Newtown Park u:p to the park gates. In order to carry big crowds of people it was nccessnry to introduce trailers, and in order to use them effectively it would 1» necessary to have a loop or circus. If the circus were at the park gates it would block the entrance altogether, and it had been therefore decided to tak« the line up Hoy Street, and to form a circus there. He assured the deputation that the Constable Street lino could not be dealt with' except with loan money, but bt-fors th« end of the year he hoped that #. schedule of works would be prepared to b» provided for in a. loan to carry out ccrtain tramway works. The taking of tho tram routes to the site of the new railway station wpuld be the main work, but tho Constable Street routo would also be on the schedule. The requests for public conveniences, and for a more frequent, rubbish service, would have to be reported upon .by the engineer. On the other matter of tho setting up of a depot for tho receipt of electric light dues at Newtown, he reminded the deputation that a depot established by the Gas Company at Newtown had not been found necessary, and had bsen closed up.
