A SILENT CLOCK.

IN TEE TOWN HALL TO WEE. The City Council last night deolared ngain6t chimes in tho proposed new clock in tho tower of the Town Hall a nd in favour of a silent electric does. The Orphans' Club made alternative offers to t.ho council to instal an electrio olock, to cost about ,£IOO, or a chiming clock, to cost about .£I2OO. As to which offer it would bo advisable for tho council to accept fcho City EDgineor was instructed to report. Tho following recommendation of tho I'll)anco Committee was last ni(jht adopted by tho council without discussion. "That thoy havo considered tho City Engineer's report on the quest'on of a clock for the Town Hall. Tho City Engineer considers it inadvisable to havo n clock willi chimes, partly on acoounfc of interruptions to concerts, etc., and partly owing to tho confusion that would t-.xihi on nccount of tho proximity to tho I'ost Office clock. He considers that a (■lock contfolled electrically and synchronic! froni tho Observatory, is tho only typo which should bo considered. Ths cost would l>e between ,£4OO and ,4350 0, exelusive of cost of wiro from Observatory to Town Hall.' There is amplo stability in tho structure of tho Town Hall tower for the accommodation of bells if decided upon. Tho committee havo to reoommend that tho council adopt tho recommends* tion of tho City Engineer, and that tho offer of tho Wellington Orphans' Club to raise the necessary funds for tho clook bo accepted with thanks."
