"PUSS IX BOOTS." Both at the matinee yesterday afternoon and at Un usual perlonnauee last night the Opera Hou.se was crowded with people anxious to see the latest pantomime. The season closes 011 Saturday next, on which date there will be an afternoon and evening performance. "Puss in Hoots" is next to the favourite, "Mother Goose/' probably the best pantomime that has been produced in Wellington. Comparing this with former productions of a similar kind» on..' iimU that the tendency i& to cut down the actual fairy story from which pantomime derive their name and sequence fhey may have, and <0 introduce various acts of a vaudeville nature. ,ln fret the chid' w»se of the actual story in modern pantomime is that it supplies a motive for elaborate ?eenery. In this respect, 'Tu?s in Boots" excels many of its j forerunners. ; THE XKW DADDIES.. The Xcvr Dandies, in the Concert Cham--1 ber of the Town Hall manage without any i apparent difficulty to draw their fuill quota I of Wellington theatregoers, despite the at- : traction at the Opera House. < Mr. lord I Waltham, with his fiuo bass voice, has already established a popularity in Wellington. The feminine portion of the company, Misses Lily, Fitzgerald aud Ross, ore a strong combination, and do not fail to attract in their individual items. As a dancer, Mr. Tier is hard to beat, while Mr. Brcnnan's mumming, .and Mr. Edwards's comic songs and patter kept tlio, ball of fun rolling and complete an entertaining company. THEATRE ItOTAL. The Fuller-Bretman Company at tlio Theatre Koyal is presenting a bripht ana attractive entertainment this week. 'j'lio palatial Ilis .Majesty's Theatre, wliicli is the last word in theatre construction in Kow Zealand, wnswell filled last evening, when an interesting programmo of pictures was yliown. Lovers of tlio Emerald Isle and its many romances will appreciate the story-picture, "Kathleen Mavournecn," which is capably acted by thft .Ellison Company. ■ Other pictures of note are, "The Man Higher Up,' "pr. Maxwell's Experiments." the great Ohio floods, and the l'athe Gazette.
THE NEW THEATRE. Tile programme at the New Theatre will be changed to-day. "Lcali the l'orsaken" was screened last night', but this morning its place of, honour as tho "item of. items' will be taken by a film callcd "Lather, which in tho advertisement is described as a "startling spectacular play." . "Father is a dramatic film which is stated to have proved a remarkable, success wherever shown. The subject is reported to be staged on a most costly scalo and there is a most realistic conflagration introduced. What is described as another capital picture will btr. the A itagrapli drama "The Red Barrier." There nru also comedies, scenic, and industrial films. KING'S THEATRE. A capital selection of pictures is being screened at the King's Theatre this veek. Among the bast are , the sensational dramatic picture, . "The Hidden Message,' tho exciting incident embodied in "Tnxio and tho Press. Agent," "Her. Fireman, ' tlio "Gaumout Graphic," and soiiio beautiful views of Ceylon. The King's Theatr6 orchestra is a. teaturo that should not b3 overlooked. EMPRESS THEATRE. The latest A.B. Company's film, "little Tease," was screened lor the last time at tho Empress Theatre last evening. The regular change of programme today will, it is stated, bring .forward an elaborately staged Vitagraph society drama "Cinderella's 1 Slipper." Mr. Maurice Costello takes the leading role. Tho principals are a young, man in humble circumstances and the daughter of a wealthy man who subsequently loses his lortune and dies, leaving his daughter in poverty. The young man, who dearly loved the girl, has never urged his suito to the disparity in their positions. The girl loses sight of him, but later on they are reunited under romantic circumstances. "The Priest and the Man," a powerful Canadian dramatic subject, "The Trynie Troupe," an ncrobatic "turn," "A Basoue Wedding" (travel), and some comedies complete the list. SHOE TTS' TH EATRE. The" principal'item, "Just Show People," at' Shortts'' Theatre yesterday will not be screened again. An entire change is announced for to-day. The new feature item is entitled "The Ship Rat," which will bo supported by a long list of minor items, including several comic pictures. , ALLEN DOONE'S RETURN. Before terminating his New Zealand tour, Mr. Allen Boone will play a return season of six nights at tho Opera House, commencing on Monday next. The taste for romantic Irish drama will bo specially catered for. "In Old Donegal," the comedo drama to bo presented on. Monday night, represonls a reversion to the rural typo of drama, and in it the company is sai<l to be seen to its best advantage. The comedy is the predominating element, and f-ven the more melodramatic and sensational episodes develop on decidedly humorous lines. Almost from start to finish the audience aro tempted by the grotesque and laughable turn, which every situation develops sooner or later, and merriment, it is stated, is the prevailing order of things. The playwright has, however, made, use of a plot which, interpreted in a different way, could provide all the ordinary sensation of melodrama. It is in Irish comedy, however, that Mr. Doono excels, and that is what the audience gets. The box plan will upon at the Dresden tomorrow morning. ORG AX RECITAL. Dr. TYjTc has consented to give an orcan recital on {he Town Hall organ next Saturday evening. Mr. J. A. Doherty has l>cen engaged as vocalist, and will sing the following numbers:—(a) "Still wio din Naclit" (Bochen); (b) "Icli Groblee Xicht" (Schumann); and "Ilybrias, the Cretan" (Elliott). The priest of admission will bo one shilling and sixpence.
