SCOW ON THE ROCKS.

TOWED 01?F BY S.S. NIKAU. Word was received in Wellington yesterday that the scow Maroro was ashoro on the rocks at Bast Entry Point, IViorus Sound, and that tho Anchor Line's steamer Nikau was standing by. The Nikau, which arrived in port last evening, was success-, ful in towing the stranded sailer off between 12.30 and 1 p.m. yesterday. It,is reported that the Maroro was making a littlo water and that sho had sustained slight damage to the forepart of her hold. The Maroro left Nelson on Friday last for Havelock. At noon on Tuesday she missed stays at tho cntranco to Pelorua Sound and went ashoro at East Entry Point. Her stern was resting against an upright cliff and the scow herself was on the rocks. Fortunately the weather was very fino at tho time. Tho Nikau received word of tho mishap at tho French Pass and proceeded direct in tho scene. Sho arrived at tho Maroro at 1.30 a.m. yesterday, and got hold of a wire hawser from tho sailer. From 2 a.m. till 3.30 a.m. sho pulled away at tho stranded vessel, but, thp tide having fallen, the attempt failed. She still stood by, however, and at 12.30 p.m. ngfliit commenced towing, and .tho vessel enmo off with the rising tide at 1 p.m. She was then towed to Kelu Day where a safe anchorago was obtained. Tho Maroro is a throo-nijjsted woodon vessel of 230 ton? grass register. Sho is owned by the Union Box and Packing Case Companv, of Sydney, and was built in 190-1 bv Messrs. Lane and Sons, Whangaroa, for the white, pinp trade. Sho ia in chargo of Captain Owens, and is Y well-known trader round tho New Zealand coast as well as in Australia. For some time past sho has been trading out of Havelock.' At one time she was engaged by ilie New Zealand Government to carry locomotives and railway rolling stock from Napier tu Oisborno and between other purls ill Now Zealand.
