THE ANTI-VIVISCETIONIST TRIAL.
After listening to tho addresses and evidence in the recent vivisectiomst case m London for 1G days, tho jury returned a verdict for the dolendants, the Pall Mall Gazette and Dr. Saleeby, after 20 mmutcs* consideration. Tho case went against tho plaintiff. Miss Lmd-af-Hageby, tho anti-viviscctionist leader, who was suing for alleged libel, and it is estimated that she and her friends will have to pa} about, .£13,000. Miss Lind is a Swede, a member of an aristocratic Swedish family, and she became a naturalised British subject onlv last vear, so that slio is paying pretty dearly for tho privilege of her new citizenship. She is credited with- having spoken some 330,000 words (luring tho trial,'and, although tho Court showed extraordinarily good temper right to the end, the jury was palpably bored to death. Had Miss Lirnl been able to wind lip the case in two or three days, the verdict might possibly have been in her favour. At tho conclusion, while expressing disappointment, she took satisfaction m the amount of publicity _ which the caso had given to the anti-vivisectionist movement. It is generally understood that the opponents of vmspction fought the case rather for tho advertisement of their cause than for the likelihood of damages. One is always impressed with the incredible amount of money available in this rich country for anything in the nature of a "movement." Tho Sydney ■telegraph's" correspondent says there is no doubt that: the money lost bv Miss Lind will bo immediately subscribed- by tlio countless thousands of people, niost of them elderly ladies, who breed and treat dogs with considerably moro pams than are renerallv given to tho upbringing of children, .ft is suggested that Hiss Lirnl and her society might go through the Bankruptcy Court in order to evade the costs but 'if this is dono it would bo a matter of tactics rather than of neces. jsltj.
