FEVER ON H.M.S. CORINTHIC.

ARDUOUS TRIP FROM LONDON,

A somewhat serious outbreak of scarlet fover occurrel on board the Shaw-Sa-vill steamer Coriuthic when she was two days out from Capo Town during her voyage from London to Wellington. Tho vessel arrived in the stream at 11 a.m. yesterday, hut it was 2 p.m. beforo sho was berthed alongside the Queen's Wharf. Tho cause of tho detention was tho outbreak' referred to, and tho ship b ,«o«ot (Dr. L. W. Bradshaw) had his hands lull. There were 11 cases altogether, and, considering that thcro wore, 200 children on board, it speaks well for the arrangements made by those responsible that tlie number of cases were not more. Iho Port Health Officer went on board the Coriuthic in tho stream, and examined tho patients and other passengers. Ho speaks in high praise of tho methods,of isolation effected by the ship s surgeon. When the outbreak was first discovered all the first and second-class passengers were confined to their respective portions in tho ship. Tho third-class paswnsers who happened to bo forward were Kept to their part also. Everything was done for the patients, and those who should know speak in terms of praise of tho work. of Miss A. Ctillev, a nurse from tho Dunlin Hospital, who'happened to bo a passenger. She iput her best: energies into the motK, and it is through her efforts (and Dr. Bradshaw's) that tho outbreak did not as«umo very serious proportions. In regard to the isolation, tho details were efficiently undertaken bv Mr. It.H ITarris. tho purser, and Mr. H. Lee, clnef steward. Canvas hospitals were erected 'in the after-part of the ship, and tlieio all patients were effectively isolated. The patients were removed to the isolation wards of the Wellington Public Hospital yesterday afternoon, and the Corinthis was fumigated from stein to st.wn beforo any work was allowed to bo carried out. .
