(From Our Special Correaponiont.) « HUTT RIVER BOARD. Tho adjourned monthly meeting of tho llutt River Board was held lost evening, and was attended by Messrs. Baldwin (chairman), Knight, and Bowers. Messrs. Uuallcr, Dykes, and Co. drew attention to an erosion which had taken place near tho II ay ward Company's lands at Haywards, and asked the board to effect repairs. It was decided to reply .that the board had no money wherewith to carry out tho work. Tho Western llutt Ratepayers' Association .asked tho board to strengthen the concrete wall in Tama Street, and to cleanse the lagoon at White's Line., Tho overseer reported that the wall would stand any likely pressure, and that the cleansing of tho lagoon was a matter for tho council. A reply is to bo sent accordingly. A deputation from the Hutt, Golf Club asked tho board to erect a protective work at the north-west corner of the golf links. Mr. Wills acted as spokesman. In- reply Mr. Baldwin mentioned that tho overseer had put in somo sills at this point, and had since been instructed to raise them. This, no doubt, would liavo the desired °'rho Petono Borough Council drew attention to the insufficiency of tho culvert through tho bank at the south end of the enclosed. avm of the river, and to tho erosion which is taking placo immediately east of the Sanitary Depot. It was resolved to ask both the Hutt and Petono Councils to meet tho'. board and discuss the matter. . It was resolved to renew tho agreement for obtaining metal from the river-bed with tho Railway Department for a turther term of five years. Messrs. E. Hayes and Co. asked to .b© relieved from their contract of securing metal from tho river beach, on. tho grounds that they could not continue under existing conditions.—Tho matter was held over. , It was resolved to re-call for tenders for Tho tender of J. W. Wallace and Co. for the supply of piles was accepted. A lengthy report fro»i the overseer was read and adopted. _ It was resolved to write to tho llutt Borough Council asking for co-operation in referring the matter of protecting Melling Bridgo at llood times to tho Go\ern"tlio board then went into committee to frame the estimates.

I'ETONE TECHNICAL SCHOOL,

The monthly meeting of tho managers j of the lactone Technical School was held Eev. A. Thomson (chairman), ami Messrs. D Sl'Keii7.ii?, A. J. llobbs, W. Irueman, a M'Kenzie, A. J. Habbe, W. A. A. T. Hope, W. Cox, and J- «• Castlo A classified report of the amount earned in fees during the past quarter was submitteel by Jlr. J. Lynskey. director, Iho report mentioned that great strides had been made in most of the classes. Four years ago the total capitation earned by the associated and free-place pupils totalled .£lO3 ss. 5d., while for the quarter just ended the sum earned amounted to Xl 92' os. lid. In an additional report the director staled that very satisfactory work was being done by tho pupils, most of whom had put in tho maximum number of attendances during the quarter—on account of tho wool class becoming so popu-lar-some of- the pupils coming from Itiitn. and Upper Ilutt, an extra night had to be set aside for this class, which has an attendance of twenty-five, and increasing weekly. Tho carpenters' shop was being used for tho present, and a separate buildwas urgently required. At the examination held on May 8. saF. and were all successful. Additional expenses have been incurred through the increaso in the classes. The shorthand -class, although doing good work, was 100 full, and the teacher was handicapped. ■ Notice was received from _ the Public Service Commissioner granting permission to Mr. Mitchell, who is a Civil Servant; to continue his position as instructor to the shorthand class. Speaking to the tabulated report sub-mitted-by Mr. Lynskey, Mr. fashe sf"<J it was plea-ant tn know that the finances were in, such a position that the managers need not worrv about tho payment ot the instructors' sn]arie.=, in tho pnst. Burridge. the examiners in the wool-classing reported that tho pubils who sat, for the woolclassing and sorting examination had all Passed and wore strongly recommended to continue their studies. FIRE AT 'TECHNICAL SCHOOL. | •U a quarter to on? yesterday afternoon a "fire broko out in tlio woodwork room at the Petone Technical School. Mr.; Tunley, woodwork instructor, left the premises at 12.15, and upon returning discovered the place in flumes. 110 cave the alarm, and with the aid of a bucket managed to suppress the flames before the brigade arrived. The scene of the outbreak was littered with shavings, but the origin of the fire is unknown. The building, is not insured. The damage done is estimated at .£lO. HUTT ESTIMATES. . The Hutt Borough Council made satisfactory piogress with (ho estimates at Monday uiplit's meeting. They sat till 11 o'clock, ana then adjourned till next Monilav night, when it is cxpcctcd that the-estimates will be confirmed. Mr. H. E. Leighton writes to exnlain that the transfer of his auctioneer's license to Mr. AY. Short (of Pctono), (referred to in our renorl: of Monday's meeting of tho Lower Hutt Borough Council) was only a temporary one made during his (Mr." Leigh ton's) illness.
