HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tho usual meeting of the .Hutt Counly Council was held yesterday, Mr. W. Galloway presiding. Councillors W. J. Howell, J. Wakeham, J. Whiteman, T. Edwards and W. Welch were also present. 'l'he inspector of works (Mr. J. W. Cudby) reported that. 18 chains, of oheap fencing had been erected along the beach at Pliinmerton extension for the purpose of protecting lupin seed, which the council intend to sow on the beach side of Moana Hoad with tho object of preventing drift sand from covering the road.
The inspector also reported that he had examined the site of the proposed culvert at tho foot of the Paekakariki Hill on the Whareroa side. In his opinion the safest manner in which to deal with it would be to bridge it, according to a plan which he submitted to tho council. ' Tho superstructural portion would be of concrete, and the top would be of wood and could at any future time be renewed at short notice. It was decided to procced with the work. With regard to the storm water trouble near tho Wallaceville - station, tho ergineer stated that the Railways Department were dealing with the matter. The report was adopted. Mr. G. Laing-Measori reported that the Moonshine Bridgo approaches' contract had been satisfactorily completed on April IG. The total oontract price and extras amounted to ,£3ll ,Bs. Ho also reported on the completion of the Moonshine Bridgo contract. The specified date for completion was March 1, but the bridge had not been completed until May 1. A considerable amount of bad weather had been.experienced and this had been mainly responsible for the delay. The total contract prise and extras was ~£2130 ss. In another report Mr. Laing-Meason drew the council's attention to the necessity of _ protecting the river banks on either side of the bridge. It was deeided to have the matter attended to.
A letter was received from tho District Engineer of the Railways at Wanganui, asking the council to cause certain high tiees to be cut back as they obscured tho view of the level road railway crossing' at Puraparumu. ■ Councillor Howell said that the crossing was a very dangerous one. Ho suggested that a cheap sign with the words "dangerous crossing" in large red letters should bo put'up in a conspicuous place about two chains away from the snot. He thought that this would meet the case. The trees referred to were on private property, and the only way in which the council could get over that' difficulty would be to purchase the corner with the trees on, which obscured approaching trains. After further discussion it was decided to ask, the borough's inspector to report on tho matter.
