Mr. Eobson, of Halcombe, has been appointed master of the Ashhurst School, in placo of Mr. Buchler, who takes over the now school in Palmerston on July 1. Mr. F. G. Nightingale dietl at his late residence, Peathcrstou Street West, on Saturday evening. Deceased was a builder by occupation, and came to r.almerston from Christciiurch about twcho years ago, having landed in tho Dominion some 16 years before from Australia. He wa9 tho eldost son of Mr. x. «• Nightingale, of Tasmania, and besides a wife leaves two children-Mr. Chaves Nightingale, who is in Australia, ona Miss Elsie Nightingale, of Palmerston. Tho funeral takes place to-day. , Of the senior cadets in Palmerston and the surrounding neighbourhood, -21 are to be transferred this month either to tne .territorials or riflo olubs. NAPIER. It burst low down on tho 'horizon towards the north-west with a bright greenish coloured light, which momentarily illuminated the surroundings, and then dropped, apparently into the sea, with a dull Ted glow. It is a splendid specimen, and nas been named "Captain : 'Cook." At Friday's annual meeting of the Motueka Licensing; Committee, Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M., presiding, all renewals of licenses with the exception of the Post Office Hotel, Motueka, the Golden Downs Accommodation House, and the Telegraph Hotel, at' Takaka;' was granted. The meeting adjourned until September G to enable, before granting licenses, the now Post Office Hotel at Motueka to be completed; repairs to be carried out at Golden Downs; and drainage attended to at the Telegraph Hotel, at Takaka. It ia understood, that a Palmerston North company is being formed to work tho marblo deposits at Takaka Hills, Sandy Bay, Nelson. Tho marble is described as being', free of flaws, and of blue, light grey, and variegated blue and white ehado, and of great tensile strength. It la intended to use the marblo for monumental purposes, as well as for .building. MASTERTON. '& mild epidemio of scarlet fever has been experienced here during the last few weeks. There are at present twentythree patients in 1 tho fever ward of the hospital. Inquiries made from the Health Officer this morning showed that the epidemic is abating. No fresh cases have been reported during the last three days. An outbreak of measles has also occurred in this town, and jnany children, are affected. , ' Another batch of Territorials will appear before the magistrate on Friday next to answer charges of failing to render the service required of them under the Defence Act. Considering the severe weather that was experienced last month, stock in the Masterton district, are wintering remarkably well. There is an abundance of grass, which should carry; stock well into .the upring. The Masterton Eacing Club has applied for October 16 and 17 and April 2 and 8 aa dates for its next season's racing. Tho club has made rapid strides during the last year or two, and it is hoped that the two days' 6pring meeting will be Testored. A mixed foursome medal handicap was played on Saturday afternoon by the Masterton Golf Club. The best cards handed in were those of G. G. Aitken and Miss Beetham. Tho friends of Mr. and' Mrs. Henry Mayr will learn with regret of. the death of their thirteen-year-old daughter, which ocourred in the Masterton Hospital on Saturday., A mattress in the house of Mr. Jackson, at Ruripiirii, took firo on Sunday night, and an alarm was, sounded, on the firebell. Glover has been appointed to the Foxton Salvation Army Corps. The Bey.
