HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, and was 'attonded by tho Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), and Councillors Phypers, Meldrum, Parsonage, Kempthorne, Hodgins, Ball, Hobbs, Clendon, and Dawson. • In referenco to the footpath in Pilmuir Street, Mr. Prydo asked, if the council intended to proceed further with, tho work. Ho suggested tbat bis instructions had been misunderstood, as only somo three chains of footpath had been done. It was decided to inform, Mr. Prydo that a man was at present ongaged 1 on tho work. In regard to level crossings, tho Bailway Department advised that under the existing Act the duty of improving tho view of sucb crossings was thrown upon tho local authorities. The council would therefore make improvements where necessary. j JLr. J. Moncrieff notified that he had given instructions to have the fences on tho Reynolds Estate put in proper order. —Received. Mr. W. H. Hook complained that tho drain tinder Randwick Road was blocked, and in consequence his property suffered: during wet weather. The engineer stated that he had ascertained tho drain was not choked, but that tho water came from another sourco. This was being attended to. Mr. Leighlon wag granted leave to transfer liis auctioneer's liconso to Mr. R. W. Sliortt, of Petonc. Councillor Clendon drew attention to the matter of keeping drains and culverts clear, and, on his motion, it was resolved to instruct tho engineer accordingly. Messrs. Young and Tripe, solicitors, writing on behalf of Mr. Macaskill (who met with an accident recently whilst a dTain was open), asked if tho council were prepared to make payment in settlement of the claim. Tho Mayor stated that, in this caso, tho council refused liability, us thero was good evidence to show that the lamps were l alight when the accident occurred. Ho moved that the council take 110 action other than defend proceedings.—Carried. The Hutt Park Committee wero granted a sum of JCIO in advance, on account of the current year's grant. Referring to the council's letter of May 14, the Wellington Hospital and Chantable Aid Board pointed out that, if tho payment of the first levy wero held over, ilie board would have to pay for accommodation in the event of delay, and the charge would fall back on the contributing bodies, and, further, a delay would consequently cause delay with the Government subsidy. The amount was passed for payment. Mr. R., Pug returned his Elmwocd Estate drainage notice, and pointed out that his property did not abut the drain
in question.—Received. It, was resolved to forward a letter ot thanks for his assistance during tlie construction of the reservoir extension. Ratepayers of Alicotown asked that footpaths bo constructed in necessary portions of that part of their district. The matter was held over till tho estimates were brought down. The engineer reported that the work at tho reservoir was almost complete, but it was proposed to wait a few months liefore loading tho cover with soil. Tho c,rushing-m<ibal plant had teen pilaced near King's Road, and work was being gono on with. Tho gas main in King's Road was nearing completion. Tho r&port was adverse to kerljing and channelling at Hie northern, end of Victoria Street until the fences wero set back in lino with others. Concrete foundations were being prepared for the sanitary dapot at the eastern septic tank. Tho report was adopted. i'lio council then went into committco to consider the estimates for tho current year. '
