NEWTOWN BEAT ATHLETIC* A BIG SCORE. Thero was a satisfactory muster of spectators at Newtown Park to witness tho League gamo between Newtown and Athletic. Tho latter team went down rather badly, especially towards tho end of tho game, and tho big scoro of 2G points to i clearly showed Newtown to bo tho stronger combination. Tho game was not without interest, especially during tho first half, when Athletic put up a big fight to hold their opponents. .Newtown played against a strong wind from tho start, and when their turn came to bo aided in this direction, they soon put on points which left tho gamo without a doubt long before it was finished. Spencer kicked off for tho Whites, and after tho return, clever back play by Russell, Murdock, and George took the game , into Athlctic's territory. Ryan marked well for Athletic, and stopped tho rush, and Brookes sent to mid-field- Hero Russell put in'one of his characteristic . runs, and play was taken again to Athletic's 'end. A series of scrums on the line followed, and it looked as if Newtown would score. A knock-on by George, from a. long pass, sent out by Strickland, relieved the tension for a moment, but Newtown kept up tho attack, and Warsaw, marking in a good-position, Strickland took tho shot at goal. Tho ball wont high, but not quite straight, and Athletic were enabled to force. On tho ball comiug into play again, Strickland got clear away. His chances of scoring wero onded, however, when Wilson threw him into touch. Another fine pa-sing-bout for Newtown saw tho ball go from Russell, to Murdock, to Strickland, and on to Cooper. Tho last-named failed to .tako it, and another chanco of scoring was lost. Johnston and Wilson took up tho attack for Athletic at this and for the first timo tho ball was l iken to tho Whites' end. Godwin proved equal to defending his line, and a clover pick up by him, followed by a long kick, gave Newtown tho chance to again press Athletics. Tho defending team were next penalised, and Strickland sent tho leather between the posts. Beiisemann put in a fino dash for the Whites. When tho ball came into play again, Murdock and Strickland put in a clover run, which ended in Strickland scoring between tho posts. He added an easy goal. Newtown livened up when these points had been registered, and Davidson and Bcere, by clover footwork, piloted the ball into a dangerous position for Newtown. Wilson tried to dive over tho lino, but was pulled back, and Bensemann rclievcd. Newtown wero shortly after penalised. and Ryan kicked a lovely goal for Athletic.
