Local registry office-keepers oro stated to resent tlie new regulations which will materially reduco their scalo of fees. The Orchostral Society had an excollcnt audienco for its concert on Thursday oveninn at tho Opera Hoiiso, Mr. J. A. Graham directed tho orchestra as usual. Mr. F. Johnston, of Wellington, 'cellist, ond. Miss Bello M. I'cttitj and Mr. Noil Eussell wero the vocalists, and Mr. A. J. Borrymau played a trumpet solo. Tho accompaniments wero played by Miss Graham, Mrs. Reid Mackay accompanied Miss I'ottit. ' Quito a number of socials and dances havo been held in the l'almerston district during tho past week. At Fitzhorbert on Wcdnosday a concert and danco and on Friday a eucliro tournament and dance wero held. At Glen Oroua on Monday last tho social club held tho second of its fortnightly eucliro and dance parties. Tlio winners of tho tournament wero:— Ladies, Miss Wnlsli (liongotea) and Mrs. l'eareo (Rongolea); gentlemen, Mr. E. Holly (Pohangina) and Mr. J. Carroll. Music was supplied by Misses Moffatt, Clark, and K. Walsh 4 and Messrs. C. Penny, J. and A. Carroll. Miss Pilling sang during tho evening.

Mr. Walter Fisher, of Hastings, left for Scotland on Thursday morning. MASTERTON. A smoke concert was tendered the visiting competitors at the dog trails this week by tho Masterton Collie Club. Skating, which has been neglected for some years, has again bccomo a popular form of amusement in this town. Considerable interest is centred in tho senior Rugby football matches for to-day. Tiie Druids aro at present leading in tho competition. Tho Paliiatua Firo Brigade held tlrreo competitions at the Brigade Station on Tuesday for the yearly challenge shield. As a result, Branchman J. Munns holds tho shield for tlio 1013 season. Ho also won Lieut. A. White's gold, medal. Hydrnntman F. Parkes was second, and won tho medal presented by Life-member J. Milts, senr. Walpole, tho Feilding meteorologist, reports fliat the rainfall in Feilding for last month was 3.95 in., 011 18 days, tho heaviest fall being 0.92 in. on tho 19th, For May last year tho rainfall was 2.13 in., on 12 days. On Thursday evening some twenty-five or thirty members of n.surpriso party assembled to welcome home a popular resident of Aorangi, Mr. T. Fl'oult, and his newly-wedded wife. FOXTON. Tho Tennis Club's eucliro party and daneo took place in tho Masonic Hall on Tuesday niglit. Mrs. Phillips, Misses M'llardio and Wanklyn, and Messrs. Phillips, Gabites, and Mr. Burgess (secretary) wero the committee. Miss Stacpoole and Mr. Jackson won tho prizes in the eucliro tournament. Mr. Phillips carried out tho duties of M.C. at the dance. Tho funeral took place at Mangowoka yesterday of Sir. Thomas Cooper, the wellknown slicepl'armer, of the Upper Knwhatau.
