LACROSSE.

[Br Goal Umpire.] CLUB AND OTHER NOTES. Play Improving, Favoured by fine weather on Saturday last, a good number of Jacrosseurs met at tho Basin Ik-serve, to complete the iirst round of tho Proud Cup fixtures. I notice that the matches disclosed an improvement in tho .style of the game. In fact, I think tbat tnc match between Wellington and Columbia was one of the cleanest intcr-club matches played ior some time past. Of course, ido not wish to imply'that the Keibume-Capitol match was in any way rough, but I think that tho remarks of many oi the supporters of the game have borne iruit, inasmuch, that wild checking was not much in evidence. If players would only uso their head as well as they use their crosse, the game wouid eventually become «he most fascinating and gentlemanly one in New Zealand. Last Saturday's Club Games. Regarding the results of last Saturday's matches, Ivelburne's win over Capitol came as a surprise to most followers of the game, but it was not by any way a lucky win. It was a win absolutely by tho better team on the day's play. Keiburne seem to have recovered some of their old style, and, by making their play very fast and open, were able to penetrate the redoubtable Capitol's defence. Of' course, ICelburne are very fortunate in having secured Kershaw —an old Canadian aud Qhristchurch goalkeeper—to play for i them. The Renkm brothers, assisted by Andrews and Hubbard, endeavoured hard to score, but Kelburnc's defence playersCanty and Jordan—backed up by l J roud, were able to hold their own easily. In the Wellington-Columbia match (both teams have been defeated by Capitol) play was, right from the first lace-off, very clean and fast, and Columbia hnd scored six goals before half-time. Then the Reds, who have always played pluckily, pulled together, and, with Skipper Lee and Ryder in the defence, ably assisted by Woods and Stephens, were able not only to prevent the Black trio—Casey, Grant, and Lcydon—from scoring more than once in the second spell, but were also' able to feed their attack players. Through lack of combination, tho latter were unfortunate in not scoring a fewmore goals. Thero is one tiling I noticed, about Firth on Saturday. It he would opon tho play up, and not try to do all tho scoring, I tlimk that Wellington would bo "able to hold their own m most matches. Good Player. Leaving. t , It is with regret that players have learned that Davis, one of Wellington t best attack players, has been transferred from the Government Insuranco in Wellington to Greymouth, and I am quite sure that all the boys wish him luck m his new position. The Birthday Display Game. It was an interesting exhibition match that was played between the pioneers of lacrosse in Wellington and tho present players at tho Basin Reserve on thfci morning of tho King's Birthday. Tho game was a splendid exhibition. In the first quarter tho Pioneer men showed how lacrosse should really bo played, but, before half-time, condition began to tell, and from then on tho Present Players be-' gan to make the game very fast» but that did not seem to upset the equilibrium of the Pioneers. They simply came back, and played a defensive gamo. Why Not Lacrosse at the Park? One is inclined to think that if another exhibition match could bo arranged it would .bo beneficial to lacrosse in Wellington. Ilow about playing*a match like that as a curtain-raiser to. a representative Rugby football match? Surely, such an ardent enthusiast as Casey could arrange this.

Positions of Clubs. The positions of the clubs with regard to championship points run. as follow:— • * rS -go ! 1 i P 15 $ \li i » j Wellington .... 3 1 2 8 21 2 Kelburne 3 1 2 11 *-0 - Proud Cup Fixtures. Tho second round of the Proud Cup competition will commence at. the Basin Reservo this afternoon. Tho following is the drawing for the sccontl round Saturday, June 7: Capitol v. Columbia, Kelburno v. Wellington; Saturday, June 14: Columbia v. ICelburne, Wellington t. Capitol; Saturday, June 21: Kelburno v. Capitol, Wellington v. Columbia. A good attendance is expected at the Basm Reserve this afternoon, when Capitol and Columbia, the two loading clubs in tho championship competition, will strive for supremacy. Another interesting display should bo provided by the Kelburno and Wellington teams, whose struggle for a hHier place on the honours list is being anticipated with enthusiasm by their respective supporters. Both matches will commence at 3 p.m..
