HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(From Our Snoolal Correspondent.)

Word has been received by the Petono Borough Council that the town clock recently ordered is on board tho CorLnthic, which is duo to arrive in Wellington next Tuesday. No timo will bo lost by the contractors (Messrs. Ballinger and Co.) in placing the tiinc-pieco in position in the municipal buildings tower. l?or some days past residents of Petono have been complaining about small boys : armed with .catapults trying their skill on peoplo walking along tho highway. Windows have been broken, and, just a few "days ago, a lady walking along ono of tho main streets received a volley of stones from a F nrt y k°>' 9 ' nll armed with this nasty little weapon. An elderly man had a similar experienco in Petono just recently. . The proposal of the Hutt Firo Brigade to prooure a motor fire-engino has arrived at a definite stage. It is now quite probable that the Borough Council will make a purchase. In the past tho firemen have experienced difficulty with the present antiquated style of h'oso and ladder-cart ; which they have to propel themselves, and should the new move come off, it will bo appreciated by the brigade. Yesterday afternoon Inspsctor. Hugo visited Lower Hutt, and was 6hown a motor vehicle which the brigado had approved of. Tho inspector stated that in his opinion the conveyance would be very snitablo for the Lower Hutt district. In order to roiso tho necessary money, tho brigado will make nn appeal to the public by way of subscription, and the council has agreed to graut a £ for £ subsidy up to ,£125. A prominent member of tho brigado is very optimistic about raising tho money, and is of tho opinion that the local peoplo will not bo appealed to in vain.
