THE LOWEST DEATH-RATE.
INSPECTOR'S REPORT. TIIO Chief Sanitary Inspector (Mr. J. Doyle) has furnished a report to the City Engineer concerning the work of his staff. Following are some extracts from the report;— "1 think it ;'s quite safe to say that the sanitary condition of tho city is satisfactory, and this is supported by the tact that tho death-rate shows a continued downward tendency. 'Tho rate for tho past year (9.13) is tho lowest in the lour centres, and is also a considerable improvement 011 last year's figures (10.0S). llouse-to-houso inspection goes on continuously, and although insanitary conditions aro always likely to arise in the intervals between the inspectors' visits, they aro dealt with as quickly as possible. "Tho total number of inspections, made during tho year was 1)2,008, which include subsequent inspections necessary to see that notices served have been complied with. "Thero aro now 4233 houses in the outlying districts, of which 1491 have been drained ill accordance with the by-laws. 'The. drainage of the others is being pushed on as rapidly as circumstances permit. "Wo are indebted to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for information, in connection with cases of infectious diseases in the city during tho year. A total of 333 cases were reported as under:—Scarlet fever, ill; diphtheria, 77; tuberculosis, 87; enteric fever, 18; blood-poisoning, 8; puerperal sepsis, 2. Tho houses ill which tlie.so cases occur are liotc-d, the particulars carefully recorded, mid 111 this way a'health history of every house in the city is being gradually compiled." Following is a return showing tho number and description of buildings in the city:—Dwellings, 11,218; shops, 1432; Chinese fruit shops, 70; Chinese laundries, 27; European laundries, 12; European fruit shops, 2G; stables, 410; hotels, 47; factories and warehouses, 752; churchss, 62; public halls (licensed), 27; schools, 42; offices, 247.
