HEAVY POLLING.

AUSTRALIA'S GENERAL ELECTION.

STILL IN SUSPENSE.

THE REFERENDA. "NO" LEADS ON FIVE ISSUES. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright (Rec. June 4, 8.5 p.m.) Sydney, Juno 4. As later returns arrive it becomes evident that tho poll has been heavy everywhere. It is estimated that in round numbers tho votes cast in the 72 contested electorates up to this morning total about 200,000. The absent votes not counted range from a few in some cases to several thousand in others, such as Perth, so that, even the number of electorates counted as "safe" is not altogether out of tho stage, of doubt. Whichever party wins, it is apparent! that the margin will bo so narrow that' its position in the new House will be unsatisfactory and precarious. REFERENDA FIGURES TO DATE. (Rec. July 4, 8.5 p.m.) Sydney, July 4. The Referenda count is likely to cover several more days. The running so far has been closer than was anticipated. 'Tho voting to date on the six questions-is as follows:— Trade and Commerce: Yes 457,220 No 480,713 Corporations: Yes 456,631 No 465,222 Industrial: Yes 453,879 No 475,250 Railways: , Yes 450,912 No 461,201 Trusts: Yes 460,063 No 450,439 Monopolies: Yes 437,247 No 443,770 SENATE RETURNS. .LABOUR AHEAD IN FOUR STATES. (Rec. June 4, 9.45 p.m.) Sydney, June 4. The Senate election figures are still largely incomplete in all the States Now South Wales,

DEADLOCK IF LIBERALS WIN. (Rec. June 4, 11.30 p.m.) Sydney, June 4. Both Mr. Andrew Fisher (Federal Premier) and Mr. Joseph Cook (the Opposition Leader) decline to express a definite opinion until the position is better defined. Mr. Win. Hughes predicts a deadlock it tho final returns give the Liberals a majority. They can pass no laws wherewith the Senate, which has an overwhelming Labour majority, does not agree, and cannot even get Supply. One thing was certain—responsible Government,, in such circumstances would be impossible. , AN INTERESTING SEE-SAW. ILLAWARRA AND BALL!I!AT. (Rec. June 5, 0.20 a.m.) Sydney, June 4. Illawarra and Ballarat nro still see-saw-ing. In the former electorate the Liberals pulled the Labour lead down by 119. In Ballarat, Labour is loading by eight .votes. On the present figures, and with the stipulation that the absent votes may upset some of the calculations, tho "Herald" makes tho position: Liberals, 33; Labour, 35; doubtful, 2. The "Telegraph" estimates tho result thus: Liberals, 38; Labour, 37. Tho balance of opinion seems to favour Labour winning both the doubtful 6eats, and that the final figures will givo the Liberals a majority of one.
