CONDUCT OF DEFENCE CASES.

Twelve charges against Lyttelton youths of failing to render personal servico m tho Senior Cadet Company were heard at tlio Lyttelton l'olico Court this morning. Ono voutli said that he war already a member of tho Territorial Band, and another said that when lie was transferred to C"risvchurcli he verbally notified tho ( Lyttelton commanding officer of his transfer, alul ilO was now serving in Hie Railway Department Corps. These charges were (lis. missed. Two others staled thai' they hn« wished to join tho Territorials, and had made application to do so. . 'IIITOO -otr.fllS who did not appeal' were fined 10s., and costs, aiul five others (who promised to attend regularly in future) were ordered to come up for sentenco when called upon. Mr. Bishop, S.M., remarked oil the absence from court of any responsible officer of a cadet company. A sergeant-major had been entrusted with the work of conducting the eases, and tho magistrate, remarked that the authorities had 110 right to place him in that position, as lie was not in a position to know tho details ol the cases. In future, unless proper oiheors attended the court to conduct these eases, lie intended lo dismiss churses. It was jM>t treating the matter properly to entrust tho business to a sergeant-major, who, after all, did his host, and nboyed orders, but it practically aniountcd to contempt ot Court oil the part of senior cadet officers to bring these charges and not to appeal' in support of them
