The entries in c'hseso were somewhat smaller than usual, but tlio quality was ■excellent. Tn«re is a remarkable degree of uniformity in body and texture ill practically every exhibit. The judges awarded the maximum points 'for. get-up and iinish. Competition in creamery butter was very keen, and in many cases the judges had great difficulty in ail'iviDg at a decision.
- Tho official opening for the show was performed by tlie Hon. H. I). Bell, who, referring to tho opening for our products in t'lio markets of the world, said that only the other day he was talking to tho greatest of London meat sellefs, who told liim that they fully anticipated the opening of the Continental markets to the meat of this country. He believed also that there was great hope for the flax industry. After referring to the increasing exports of dairy produce to Canada and South Africa, Mr. Bell said tho value of dairy produce (butter and, cheese) exported from Now Zealand during tho past j-ear had exceeded by half a million the value of the dairy produce exported during tho preceding year. TM> entries for the slow totalled 1297, as against 1393 last year, the l'alling-oft' being chiefly in grain, roots, and cheese. The bad season affected the growth of grain and roots, while the shortage of cheese is due primarily to tlio fact that a considerable number of factories d'd not forward exhibits. Tho takings to-day totalled .£333, qs ngainst .£167 on the first day last year.
| those found in' tho Canadian cliecr.o have also been present in tho New Zealand chcesa this season, tho majority of which have contained an excess ot moisture, causing tho texture to be loose and open nnd the shrinkage to be very great. It is to. bo hoped that tho faults mentioned will l>o remedied in tho coming season's make of Canadian cheese.
