THE KING'S BIRTHDAY.
. YESTERDAY'S'CELEBRATIONS. MILITARY PARADE AT THE PARK. Boyal ■weather was experienced in Wellington yesterday, when a close holiday wag observed in honour of His Majesty the King's Birthday. June weather as a rule is far from pleasant for those desirous of spending a day in the open, but yesterday was quito exceptional. A clear jky, brilliant sunshine, aud tlio lightest of southerly winds made the mormng one to be remembered, aud invited tho public to come out and be glad. During the afternoon tho sky became slightly overcast, but in mo wise did it interfere with the enjoyment of the day. The official parade of Territorials and Cadets at Newtown Park, betweaa 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., attracted a largo number of spectators, who were rewarded by a very fine military spectacle, which gained in effect ■from the setting provided by the natural amphitheatre of tins park. At noori the quiet of the harbour-front was broken by a Royal salute fired by ]E[.M.S. Pyramus as she lay at the wharf. The fixing of tho salute sa cIos« to the buildings along the water-front had the effect of creating a double echo to usteners on tho other side of the harbour. All the vessels in port were gaily decorated with bunting, which, during tho greater part ■of the morning, was scarcely disturbed by the lazy breere. Most of the Consular offices in town also sported their national flags in honour or the day.During the afternoon large numbers visited the Basin Reserve and Athletio Park to witness the representative football, matches, and the early trains to-the Manawatu. conveyed a largo number 01 people to tho races at Otaki.
