DIOCESAN COUNCIL MEETS.

The first meeting of the Wellington Diocesan Council of tho New Zealand Catholic Federation was hold at St. Patrick's Hall yesterday. His Grace Archbishop Eedwood, S.M., His Grace Coadjutor Archbishop O'Sliea, S.M., the \en. Archdeacon Devoy, Deans Eegnault, Holiy (Wanganui), tbo Very Eev. Father heogh Hastings), Eev. Fathers Harnett. (Masterton), Daly (Upper Ilutt), Bowe (Carterton), Do Lach (Otaki), J. G-oggan, J. Herring, Hurley, and Barra (Wellington), were present, and also tho delegates from all quarters. Mr Geo. Girling-Butcher was to tho chair, and Mr. P. D. Hoskins was appointed secretary for tho meeting. BBoth His Graco Archbishop Eedwood and His Grace the Coadjutor Archbishop O'Slux were given a warm reception, tho former in the shaj>6 of a welcome on his return from Europe, and the latter on his elevation to Coadjutor Archbishopric of Wellington. Archbishop Eedwood eulogised the gTeat work of the Catholic Federation, which was most important, especially in its endeavour to see that tile rights of minorities were respected. Ho instanced tho successful results of Germany, Australia, and America through federation, and the growth of Catholicity in those countries. Ho also compared those countries with, JYance, where no such organisation existed. But ho was glad to say that Franco was now organising, and as a result wt.uld eventually show that by organisation Catholicity would once moro gain the T osition it had prior to the recent trouble. Archbishop O'Shea also spoke, and congratulated the federation on the v-orlc already done in the short time of its existence. Tho conference discussed many important matters affecting the welfare and rights of Catholics, and organisation. Tho election of officers of the "Wellington Diooisan Council resulted as follows:— President, Mr. Geo. Girling-Butcher; vicepresidents, Very Rev. Father Iveogh (Hastings), and Mr. ,T. W. Callaglian; secretary, Mr. E. H. Williams; treasurer, Mr. B. Ellis; representatives, Very l!ev. Dean Holly, Messrs. Goo. Girling-Butch/;r, and J. "W. Callaghan.
