$ AND THE FINANCE. ■ SCOTTISH SOCIETIES' MEETING. A. joint meeting of the Highland Dancing Sub-committee, which was set up in connection with the recent Citizens' Carnival, together with members of tho Wellington Scottish Society who acted with them, was held on 'Ihiesday. Mr. W. White, chieftain of tho Scottish Society, presided. -The meeting was called for the purpose of refuting certain statements which had been made concerning a shortage of i! 18 in connection with, the carnival sports fund. T . Mr. A. liogors, a member of tho Jii-n----land Dancing Sub-oommittoe, explained the position as far as lie was concern™. Tn the first place he wished to make it clear that he had never stated that trntse who had taken charge of subscription-lists had guaranteed .to collect £2 each, .tho facts were that twelve persons who had taken lists had endeavoured to raise as much money as they could, but 110 clelinite amount had been guaranteed. The chairman, after having read a press report of a meeting of the Sports u>mmittee which was held oil Monday, Hay 2a, said that it had been made to appear that the Wellington Scottish Society had been responsible for making up the <£18 deficit. This he wished to deny absolutely. The Scottish Society had nothing ■ whatever to do with, the lhey had never had any officii! coinmunic&tio 1 ! from the Carnival Committee in this connection, ami they were, therefore, not liable for any deficiency. Members ot the society who had assisted the committee had done so only as individuals and not as representatives of the Wellington Scottish Society. Messrs. D. M I/iren, M'Phee, and A. Rogers were the subcommittee. who had been appointed by the executive of the Carnival Committee to manage tho Highland dancing piping. It bad been further stated (the chairman continued) that it liad ocen the fault of theSoothsh Society that the various competitors in the Highland; dancing section had not received their trophies. This was also denied. It mignt to explained that thisj impression had been gained owing to the fact.that the secretary of the society (Mr. W. had received entries for the vanous Highland competitions which were held under the auspices of the Sports Committer of discussion, the following resolution was passed"That this meeting regrets that the prize-money from the lli"hlaud dancing and piping events at the° recent Citizens' Carnival has no, been collected, but the gentlemen who accepted subscription-lists absolutely deny having undertaken to collect any particular siim of monev, merely undertaking that thej would do their best to make up the deficiency.
