Sir Melville Macnaghten, of Scotland Yard, interviewed on his retirement, said that he had a clear idea of "Jack the Ripper's" identity. He was one of tho most fascinating criminals he had ever' known, and committed suicide in the. latter part of ISBB. Sir Melville Macnaghtcn declined to reveal the secret of the criminal's identity. Sir Melville Macnaghten was Assistant Commissioner of the .Metropolitan Police, and was Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department fAm 1889 till 1903. lie was appointed to represent the Police on tho Hon. H. H. Atquitli's (now Prime Minister) Committee to inquire into tho identification, of criminals.
