TIMARU STRIKE QUARREL. Timaru, May 31. An outcome of the recent trouble over wharf work was the prosecution of a young man named Murphy fo? violently assaulting C. S. Brewer, because, from tho offender's point of viow, Brewer was a "scab." Counsel for the defendant said the latter was not a wharf-worker. The row, however, began with the defendant inquiring, "Are you one of thoso — 'scabs'?" The magistrate remarked that tho large attendance of men in Court indicated that the assault was moro than an ordinary squabble, and imposed a fine of i! 5, with costs 2Gs., or fourteen' days' imprisonment, half the fiu9 to go towards the complainant's medical expenses (which the defendant promised to pay). The complainant's nose was broken. NEW OIL COMPANY. Christchurch, Juno 1. Tho International Petroleum and Mineral Development Corporation was registered in Christchurch yesterday with a capital of ,£400,000. It is understood that it will bo the largest oil proposition yet placed before the public of New Zealand. The corporation has acquired exclusive rights in perpetuity over areas in Taranaki aggregating seventeen square miles. Tlieso areas include several properties commented on by Mr. J. D. Tho police have been advised that Elizabeth Bates, aged 57, a widow, was killed on Friday evoning at Kurow, by being thrown out of a gig as the result of the horso bolting. FIRE IN,A WAREHOUSE. Auckland, June 1. A fire" broke out at 7 o'clock last night in the large five-story warehouse of the Laidlaw Lesds Company, in Fort Street. The outbreak originated in a lieap of rubbish at the bottom of tho- lift well, and the flames went straight up the well, breaking out again in bedding stored on tho top floor. The brigade was cmickly on tho scene, and soon had tho fire on the bottom floor subdued, but the flames above gavo the firemen much moro difficulty. The fire was eventually subdued, but "not until considerable damage had been dono on tho top floor, tho roof being badly buried through. A great deal of (Inmate was done to tho stock by water, but tlio total extent of the damage and tho insurances aro not available. The cause of tho fire is not known.
