CONTROL OF FISHERIES.

THE NEW ARRANGEMENT. Under.an arrangement which has just been made, the Department of Internal Affairs will control not only fresh-water fisheries which liaye hitherto been controlled by the Marine Department, but also the lake and river fisheries which have, in the past, been controlled by the Tourist Department. From June 1, llio -Minister for Internal Affairs will prescribe the conditions.governing nil fresh.water fisheries throughout' the Dominion.' 'l'he pursuit of deer and other imported and native game is already under his control, so that'henceforth tlwre will bo nn undivided control, of all hunting . mid fishing, with 'the exception of sea-nshing, which will remain under the control of the Marine Department. Mr. L. F. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, will retain that in respect of sea-fishing, and Mr. F. Moorhouse, at present a ranger and inspector in tho service of the Tourist Department at Rotorua, has been appointed to take charge of fresh-water fisheries and game under the title of Conservator of Fish olid Game.

The only places in which there will still be to some extent dual control of .fisheries are tidal estuaries. Here sea-fishing will be tinder the control of tho Marine Department, and the taking of river fish under that of the Department of Internal Affairs. Whitebait will come under the former oategory, and salmon under the latter.

The Hon. H. D. Bell mentioned to a. reporter yesterday that the smoking of fish would henceforth be carried on at Tokaanu as well as at Rotorua. Tho Taupo fish aro fuller-bodied than those nt Eotorua, and some difficulty was at first experienced in curing them satisfactorily. The uso of salt was tried, but was found to spoil the fish as a table delicacy. Latterly satisfactory mfithods have been attaineel, and the only remaining .difficulty is in regard to transport. Rapid delivery of the fish at a market, is desirable, bud is difficult to accomplish in the case of consignments from Tokaanu.
