AUCKLAND TRAIN SMASH.
PUBLIC INQUIRY SOUGHT. (By Telegraph.—Proea Association.) V Auckland, May 30. . There is 1 a general feeling that the inquiry to be held into tho Now Lvna railway oollision should be of a public nature, and a petition is already in circulation amongst those who were on tho tvrecked train urging that . the utmost publicity should be given to the whole investigation. The petition, which is addressed to the Hon. \V. H. Horries, Minister for Railways, reads as follows:— "Sir,—We, the undersigned, who : were passengers by the wrecked train on Wednesday morning, May 23, learn with indignation that the proposed inquiry into the causes that led to this accident will be of a Departmental nature. Your petitioners beg to request that the decision be revoked, and the inquiry bo (1) a public inquiry; (2). that the iscopo of the inquiry shall be (a) the cnuso or causes that led to the present accident j (b) the arrangement and working of the railway system between Auckland and Henderson, having regard to the time-tables, watering arrangements, level crossings, island platforms. and signalling; (c) any other matters not mentioned above which may the safety or efficiency of this suburban railway system; 1 (3) that the ;n----quiry shall be conducted by a raagistrate."
A Departmental inquiry into the! circumstances connected with Wednesday's accident was commenced at 2 p.m. to-day at the Railway Offices. ; It is not open to the press. ,
