COLLEGE GOVERNORS.
FREE PLACES. A meeting of tho Wellington College Board of Governors was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. R. Leo fin the chair), E. Warburton, W. F. Ward, W. H. Field, and Miss Richmond.
A letter was received from Mr. G. L. Stewart, secretary of tho Education Board, regarding certain communications to the Board of Governors from parents, raising the question of the 'insufficiency of places in the Girls' College to accommodate pupils desiring admission on the proficiency qualification. At their meeting in March the Board of Governors recommended that Free Place Regulation No. 13 bs amended, so that priority of admission in the case of applicants with the proficiency qualification be determined by tho results of tho inspector's examination for the proficiency-certificate. Tho matter wa.=s considered by the Education Board, and enclosed in Mr. Stewart's letter' was a oopy of a communication from the Assistant Inspector-General of Schools who said that the Department was unable to see its way to impose on secondary schools tho duty 'of distinguishing tho relative values of certificates of proficiency as issued by inspectors. Ho concluded:— "The question appears rather to bp whether those who havo obtained a scholarship riualification or passed the special examination for junior free places ■might bo granted priority over those who hold certificates of proficiency, especially seeing that a certain priority is already recognised under Clause 4 of tho regulations, and that the results in these cases cannot be known till later. This would afford relief and will be considered at the first opportunity." Mr. Ward moved that tho Department be urg«d to consent to allow those who havo obtained scholarship qualifications by special examination priority, as regards free places, over those who hold certificates of proficiency. Tho motion was carried without dissent.
A letter was received from tho Inspec-tor-General of Schools informing the board that a grant of '.£123 os. 3d. had been approved for classes at the Girls' College for natural and physical science, cookery, dressmaking, and drawing. The gra-nt represents half of the total cost of the apparatus specified by the board. Mr. J. I'. Firth, headmaster of tho Wellington Boys' College, wrote* recommending the following for scholarships:— Rhodes, ,£IO—II. A. Mackenzie. 1: H. D. C. Adams. Moore, .£lO—E. Iv. Itishworth, S. A. Wiren.
