JOTTINGS FROM ALL SOURCES; Hastings. A speoial meeting of the Has-tings Borough Council was held last evening when tho new Mayor, Mr. Win. Hart, presented 0 comprehensive financial statement, summarising tho borough position. Tho Mayor said that while there was no causo for alarm so far as the general account is concerned, but bearing in mind tho large sums borrowed by other accounts and tlici stringent money market, it was absolutely necessary to keep a tight hand 0:1 tho expenditure. Until they had authority to raise a loan to complefo tho drainage, and also were enabled to raiso tho ,£7OOO loan, or a portion, say, ,£4OOO, of the loan for sewer connections for which tlicy had authority, the council must say "No" to many applications for improvements. He asked all councillors to weigh well any proposal involving expenditure before submitting it at tho council table. In connection with the last loan it was imperative that the council should raise this by September next, otherwise it would lapse 111 accordance with the statute and another poll would bccomu necessary. Tho complete list of assets was in course of preparation, and. it would when completed, show that tho borough had greatly increased its assets over its liabilities.
In view of the resignation of tho Town Clerk nnd engineer (Mr. M. Cook) the council has decided (1) that applications bo invited for filling the positions of Town Clerk and engineer separately. Tho salaries offered will be: Town Clerk JC3OO, Borough Engineer »C'3so per annum. The superintendent of tho 'State Guaranteed Advance* Office, being unable to advance the JiGOOO balance of the original .£7BOO for street improvement nnd the high pressure water supply at per cent as arranged, but being in a position to advance this sum at -ti per cent, a resolution was carried by the council striking a rate of 0.13 d. in tho £ to provide the money sufficient to cover tho increase is interest. MASTERTON, The Trust Lands Trust election was held yesterday, and considerable interest -was taken in it owing to the High School establishment question. For the three ordinary .vacancies, Messrs. Jackson, 1), Caselberg, and R. Krnghen were returned by a largo majority. For tho extraordinary 'scat', Mr. J. H. M'Ewen, standing in the Labour interest, was returned, defeating Mr. E. Feist, a supporter "f the high school movement. Tlie polling was. tho heaviest known for many years. There wns considerable excitement, a* large crowd awaiting the results. FEILDING. Canon Garland visited Feilding on Wednesday in the interests of tho Biblc-in-Sphools League, and gavo an address on the subject of his mission in tho Parish Hall in the evening. The Rev. Mr. (ludd proposed a hearty veto of thanks to Canon Garland, which was seconded by the Rev. Mr. Innes Jones und carried unanimously. At the conclusion of the address thoso present formed themselves into a committee to promote tho objects of the league. For cho Shannon musical and elocutionary competitions, to be hold about tho miadlo of August, Mr. H. Temple White, of Feilding, has Ixen appointed judge of the musical sections. The business men and farmers of ICimbolton are moving in the matter of bringing the- needs ot the township aud district before the Ma-sey Ministry. A meeting is to bo held to consider tho light-lino railway proposals, the new public hall, and other lecal questions. All uuusual honour has just been paid to Feilding's Wesley Choir. The committee of the Auckland Competitions is very eager to get the choir to 00111 pete at tho musical carnival towards the end of the year, during the course of tho exhibition. The inducement is another meeting between the Grafton Road Choir iuia the Feilding Choir, which would undoubtedly be a big attraction to the general public owing to the rivalry between these two at tho recent competitions in Wellington. The committee has backed up its interest in bringing this contest about by offerinsr the Feilding combination a substantial grant towards its expenses in making the trip to the queen city. OTAKI. The funeral of the lato Mr. Martin Baker /took place on Wednesday afternoon, when the cortege was headed by tho local Maori Brass Band. There were a number ot mourners nnd the ceremony at tho graveside was impressive. The local hockey .club played Moutoa on Wednesday and won by two goals to one: The local ladies beat Shannon by G to nil. To Horo beat lialiui by 'i to nil, while Oliau defeated Tainui by Asa result of a collection made by tho local brass band U'L' has been collected and handed to District Nurse Lewis towards purchasing a horse and vehicle, whereby Mir enn gut over the district with more .advantage. The annual meeting of tho Horticultural Show lapsed 011 account of the poor attendance, there being several counterattractions. . The Girls' Friendly Society held an enjoyable "social" on Wednesday evening, when games, dancing, etc., were indulged in. There was a largo attendance. .Mr. P; Merk, who was recently married, has been made the recipient of a handsome presentation from his employers (Messrs. Hill and Barton, of Wellington) in the form of a silver cruet The suppliers to the creamery, where Jlr. Meek was manager, presented him with a .silver and oak tray. MARTON. At the Assessment Cout yesterday, there were several objections to ieccnt valuations made by the Government Valitor and the valuation of farm lands owned by Messrs. A. Poppev, Newman, Beckett, Oldlield, Cash, and Wilde wns reduced from ,£25 per acre to .€l7, a decrease of „C 8 per acre. Another portion of Mrs. Cash's land was reduced from £30 to £°2 Mr. W. C. Birch's property was reduced from ,£2960 to .£2510 capital value. Regarding (110 valuation of Mr. J. M ilson's property in Follet Street, capital value Xi'!o, "unimproved .£7O, improvement JC3GO, the objector only objected to tho unimproved value, nnd called evidence. The valuation was sustained. With regard to the objection to the unimproved valuation of five acres at the corner of Mill Street and Pukepapa Road, naniclv, .CSOfl, this was reduced lo ,£J2S. Two objections were made by Mrs. i urnell. . In one the valuation was sustained, and in the other tho valuation was rcduced from j660 to 140- Mr. A. Nrilwn's objection• was upheld in respect to two five-acre sections in Mill Street, and the valuation was reduced from .£BO to XGO per acre. BLENHEIM. The final shoot of the Blenheim Defence' Rifle Club took place on Saturday, when tho first prize and tho handicap cup were won by G. Neville, whilst T. Payne won tho scratch cup. Mr. W. A. G. l'enlington, M.A., took v.p his duties at the High School on Monday. The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) will preside over tho sessions of tho Supreme Court, to bo opened at Blenheim to-day. Miss Stapleton, of the Blenheim telephone exchange, has been transferred to l'almerst.on North. Mr. William Cooke, a very well-known resident of Blenheim, died 011 Saturday, aged 70. Ho leaves a widow, five sonsMessrs. Norman (Feilding), Harold (Ashburton), Leonard (Wellington), and Percy and Bernard Cooke, of Illenheim-aud one daughter (Mrs. A. M. Miller, of Blenheim). MANGAWEKA, Mr. Moore, secretary of tho Mangawotav Chamber of Coninicrce, has received through Mr. Newman, M.P., a very favourable reply with reference lo tho formation of AYnison's Track. Mr. J. O'ljt.i, who was taken seriously ill last week, is reported by tho "Settler" to be much better. Tho danco in tho Pohonui Hall last Friday evening was wrll attended. Tho music was supplied by Messrs. Aitchcson and Harris, and Master C. Bowiek.
