HOTEL WORKERS.
EMPLOYERS SEEK AN AWARD. The award under which hotel employees in Wellington ioruierly worked expired in August last. In that month tho provisions of the Act fixing different hours from thoso prescribed in the award camo into force, and tho result was that by reason of one clause ia tho award the whole award ceased, to operate. In December of last year tho union took steps to scours a fresh award, and a Conciliation Council sat to hear the dispute. No settlement was effected, however, and the case was referred to tho Court, but before the case reached tho Court the union withdrew their application. Now, in their turn, Messrs. J. Bevoridge, of the Grand Hotel, and P. Oakes, of the City Buffet, have cited tho union, and tho Conciliation Commissioner has fixed Juno U as tho date for investigating the case. Messrs. Bovcridge nnd Oakes aro recommended as assessors for the employers. Tho statement of demands submitted by the employers amounts practically to a request for u renewal of the old award, with the difference that the hours of work and the holidays shall be fho same as those prescribed now by legislation. A special meeting of tho union will be held on Monday next to consider the statement of claims, to draft counter-proposals, and to appoint assessors to sit on the council.
All other hotel licensees in Wellington are cited as respondents along with tho union, the apparent object being to make the new award operative for all city hotels.
