A.'.i inquest was held this afternoon beforn Mr. 11. W. Bishop, coroner, touching the death of l'oter Murdoch, of Mosgiel. farmer, age was -IS. Murdoch came up to Christchurch with a party of children who were visiting the battleship New Zealand. The evidence of tlio manager of Coker's Hotel, where deceased staved, was to the effect that the deceased, after registering at about 9., 10 p.m. on May 19, went to bsd. Ho had a single room with a gas jet with an ordinary burner on the brocket from tlio wall. It was in a position which coulil not bo reached from the bed. It was not an easy burner to turn on, and was ono with a "stop," which made it clear that it was either on or off. Tlio impression witness hod formed wns that deceased had got up to light the gas ami had tutned it on and then dropped back on his bed, as he could not find matches;. His position suggested that. Other evidence was given as to the means adopted to -restore deceased to consciousness. A verdict was recorded that deccassd died of accidental suffocation by gas.
