MID-WEEK HOCKEY.
DEFIANT PLAYER. IN A MATCH AT PETONE. Petone 4 Hercawa " Pakoha A 4 Hui Mni 2 Artillery ' 9 Pakeha li 0 Tho final games in tho first round of tho mid-week hockey competition were played yesterday afternoon. The game in which Petone and Hercawa met took place at Petonc. In the first spell Petone had much the best of the game, and at halftime were leading bv four goals, when an unfortunate occurrence took place, the referee ordering one of the Ilcreawa players off tho field. .Tho second spell started without tilt player, but when the game had been in progress for about five minutes the player again came on tho field, and, when-"again ordered by the referee to leave tho field, he refused. Tho refereo thereupon awarded the game to Petone. The game bcjtweeu Pakeha A and Hui Mai was also at Petone, and, after a very interesting struggle; resulted in a win for Pakeha by lour 1 goals to two. During the course of the game ono of the Pakeha players sustained an injured shoulder.
Artillery and Pakeha B played at Karori, aatl Artillery had a very easy win.
PETONE-HEREAWA. Petone won the toss and decided to play with the wind at their backs. From the "bully," Hercawa broke away, but Petone soon carried play over the hallway line, and Hereawa had to concede a corner to save. A second corner soon followed, but l'etono lost a chance by giving "sticks" from the free-hit, and Hereawa rushed the ball into Petone quarter?. Dolling (Petone) .stopped the rush, and sent the ball on to Howe, who carried it from the half-way line, and, beating the backs, scored the first goal for Petone. Play for a time was very even, and then Ivuch (Hereawa) broke away 111 his own half, and carried the ball within a fewfeet of the net. Biswich (Petone) saved by sending tho ball over the goal-line. From tho corner-hit, Spiers just misled the net. The Petone forwards then, forced play over the halfiway line, and J. M'Ewan passed to Cavill, rrhu scored an easy goal. Shortly ■ afterwards Cavill again scored from a scramble in tho circle. Just before half-time Cavill added another goal and the spell ended in favour of Petone by 4 goals to nil. The second spell was only in progress a . few minutes when the 'referee (Mr. Austin) awarded tho game to Petone.
PAKEHA A—HUI ,MAI. After twenty minutes of fast play up and down the field, Hui Mai's left wing broke away, and a 'hard centre was welt stopped by M'lntosli, who put the' ball •into the net. Hui Mai, 1; Pakeha, 0. Soon after the Pakeha forwards carried play iifto Hui Mai's quarters. The backs failed to field the ball, and this enabled Rowley to inako the score even. Matters for a time wero very even, both sides playing with dash and good combination. Tho Pakeha forwards' eventually P'i sscd hard, and, from a hard hit by Thompson, Rowley followed up fast, caught the Hui Mai backs napping, and scored. 'From this 011 to the end of the spell, Hui Mai was attackiug, but tho poor shooting lest them many chances, Hoy. and Hey both missing easy shots. In the second spell the play was fast, and tho backs 011 both sides went in for hard hitting. Tho Ilui Mai forwards, getting tho ball, ' rushed play into l'akoha's circle, and Bree equalised for nui .Mai. From the "bully;" l'ukelia, putting moro life into their work, rushed matters into Hui Mai quarters,- and Rowley added the third goal for Pakeha. The gamo was held up for some time, owing to an accident to one of the players; and the remainder,of tho'spell was played ill a very bad light. ,j\Vith about ten minutes to go, Heyhoe (Pakeha) added another goal. 111 tho last few minutes Hui Mai woro attacking. The game ended in favour of. Pakehii.. by.. 4 goals to 2. Mr. Jl'lConzie was referee; ARTILLERY—PAKEHA B. In the first spell Artillery had nil tho best of tho game, and goals were scored by James (3), May (1), Gleeson Ui- lu tiie second spell, Pakeha did a lot more attacking, but could not mako headway against their opponents. .Tames (2), Cox (1), and May (1) scored for Artillery. Tho game ended in favour of Artillery by 9 goals to nil. Mr. Empson was referee. POSITIONS OF TEAMS.
