Tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's steamer Tainui, !)<ISG tons gross, Homeward bound, collided with the steamer Inca, 359:1 tons, belonging to the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, during a dense fog fifty miles north of i'inisterre, Spain. Tho passengers were transferred to tho Union Castle liner Garth Castle, Tho 'J'ainui is proceeding to Corunna. The P. and 0. steamer Clalicia is escorting her. Tho No. 1 hold is full of water, and No. 2is filling. The vessel has a dangerous list. Tho Garth Castle has sent a wireless message stating that she is bringing tho Tainui's passengers to Plymouth. • Tho latest wireless nutsage from the Tainui reads, "All well." WIRELESS CALLS ANSWERED. SHIP REPAIRING AT CORUNNA. (liec. May 27, 11.30 p.m.) London, May 27. The Garth Oastle answered the Tainui's wireless call, and the Nyanza also received a call and proceeded at lull steam to render help. The Tainui has reached Corunna, and is being repaired. According to Lloyd's advices her port' bow was stove in. DETAILS ABOUT THE TAINUI. The Tainui left 'Wellington for London, via way ports, on April 17, and was due at her destination on May 30. She is a ste-el screw steamer of 3957 tons gross register, and was built in 1908 by Workman, Clark and Co., Ltd., Belfast, for tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, Ltd. She is 477.81t. long, 61.1 ft. in breadth, and 31ft. deep. The Tainui has five decks—the boat, shade, awning, main, and lower decks—and. accommodation lor 111 first and second class and 4CO third class passengers. Three of her five holds are insulated and fitted out for the carriage of frozen meat, butter, cheese, fruit, or other refrigerated cargo. The two after holds are reserved for the reception of general cargo. Tho Tainui has a sea-going speed of 13 knots, and is propelled by two sets of triple-expansion engines, sleani being obtained from six large single-ended steel cylindrical boilers, working at a pressure of 2()slbs under Howdcn's system of forced draught. The steamer made her first appearance at this port after a successful ipitial voyage from London, oil December 2G, 1903. During her first voyage to New Zealand she averaged 13.01 knots from London to Capetown. _ In her- five years' running, the Tainui has met .with no serious mishap, apart from the present collision. A very slight fire occurred on the vessel while at Lytteltoji in September, 1911, but she sustained practically no damage. The Officers, Captain T. From Lyttelton: 1116 bates wool, 209 boxes butter, 279 crates cheese, 523 casks tallow, 10 bales pelts, 30 kegs casings, 250 crates runnings, 13,575 carcasses mutton, 44,223 carcasses lamb. From Duncdin, for Rio de Janeiro: 504 sacks potatoes. From Dumedin, for Monto Video: 1 package sundries. From Bluff: 3430 crates clieese. From Nelson, 43 bales skins. From Wellington for Plymouth: 9 packages sundries. MESSAGE TO LOCAL AGENTS. The following cablegram was received by the local agents for the Shaw, Savill. and Albion Company from tho head office, London, dated May 20, 1913:— "Tainui has been in collision, in fog off Cape Finistorre. All of the passeagers are safe, and haw been transferred to s.s. Garth Castle. They are landine at Plymouth. Tho frozen meat forward holds is damaged." THE INCA.
