The Union Company's new turbine steamer Wahine, unler the command of Cantain S. Vint left the Clyde on May 17, for Dunodn, via, the Suez Canal. She is due at Dunedin about the end of June and after being commissioned and cleaned and painted, she will come up to Lytteiton to take up her running in the ferry service. It is quite probable that 6hs will relieve the Maori, which will bo sent to Port Chalmers for .a. thorough overhaul, and which will subsequently relieve the Mararoa. Doctor Observatory, Wellington.—Tho position of tho Hcctor Observatory is as follows:— Latitude, lldog, 17min. 3.765ec. South. Longitude, 11 hours 39min. 4.275ec. East of Greenwich. Height, abovo 1909 mean sea level. 118 feet. Chronometer Rating Notico.—At 1 p.m. to-day a galvanometer signal for rating chronometers will be sent from tho Observatory to tho Public Telegraph Office and to tho Dominion Museum. Tho needle will move at 1 p.m. exactly of New Zealand standard mean time, when a chronometer set to Greenwich mean time should bliow 15 houra 30inin. Any difference will bo tho error of the chronometer on Greenwich moan time. At 9 p.m. correct timo will also be signalled from tho Observatory by means of electric lights. A green light will bo switched on at about 8.45 p.m., a red ono at about 6.55 p.m., and a whito one at about 8.59 p.m., and all lights will bo nwitched off at 9 p.m. exactly of New Zealand standard moan timo. The prepare tory switching on of the lights must bo considered as only approximately corrcct, and mußt not bo used for rating chronomotera.
