In tho I'olico Court this morning four men were charged with playing "two-up" in tho vicinity of the railway yards .on Friday.' Two men, William Stevens and Archibald Neville, were sentenced respectively to six weeks' and three months', and two "pigeons" from the country, who, it was said, were being pluckod, were mulcted in a fine of £2 eatih or fourteen days' imprisonment. RECOUNT OF VOTES. THE TIMARU MAYORAL POLL. Tiniaru, May 20. Afber hearing some ovidenco to-day, tha magistrate ordered a recount of votes in connection with the late Mayoral election. Ono doputy, who had returned seven int formal votes, stated that ho put aside, as informally marked, some which the magistrate said should have been admitted. Two witnesses said that thoy were reiused papers on tho grounds that their names wero not on tho roll, when in iact they were, but not in correct alphabetioal order. MINOR AS A BAILEE. GOODS NOT TO BE ESTREATED. Auckland, May 2G. ka. unusual caso was heard at tho Polioo Court by Mr. E. C. Cutton, S.3L, when tho police applied to have tho rccognisaneo of John M. Judd (with respect to J. H. Thompson) estreated. Thompson was arrested in Palmcrston North ill March, and remanded on appeal to appear at Auckland. Judd, who was a casual acquaintance, entered into a bail-bond for iISU. Thompson appeared at the Court on tho morning required, but tho case waa, stood down till tho' afternoon, when ho had disappeared, and had not l«on seen by the polico since. Judd was not twentj-one years of ago when ho entered into tho bond, and has not yet reached that age. It was pointed out by the polico that ono legal authority held that a minor could not go bail. The magistrate, after consideration, decided to make no order in the case. THE CRUSADE ON HATPINS. Invercargill, M'jy 2G. Informations have been laid against several ladies for breaches of tho tramway by-law, prohibiting the wearing of unprotected hatpins by tram passengers. OAMARU DRINKING RESORT. 'Oamaru, May 20, David Bruce was convicted to-day of koeping a place as a resort for the consumption of liquor in a No-Lioense district, and was ordered to come up for 6cntenco to-morrow. During the hearing, counsel for the defence (Mr. Lee) withdrew his plea of not guilty. Thirteen men were charged with being found on premises used as a resort for the consumption of liquor in a No-License district. They were convicted and will come up for sentence to-morrow. Other cases aro pending hearing in consequence of Bruce'a conviction.
INCENDIARY SUSPECTED. Timaru, May 26. Another (ire, with a strong suspicion of i incendiarism, occurred this evening, th« batting sheds on Caroline Bay bsing considerably damaged. Material m a storeroom was also damaged. FIRE ON A STEAMER. Auckland, May 28. ■ ' The steamer Courtfield arrived from New York via Australian ports this morning. On March 13, when on the high seas, a fire was discovered in No. 3 hold. When tlio hatches were removed, a large quantity of general cargo .was found to bo ablaze. Tho outbreak was got under control after two hours' strenuous work, llio extent of tho damage is not yet known. "I'LL FIX YOU!" Hamilton, May 25. William Benson appeared before Mr. Rawson, S.M., to-day, charged with discharging firearms at George Allen last night. It is alleged that Allen has been westering Benson s wife with attentions , for some time, and was waiting outsida Benson's house last night,, when ■went into the road and, it is stared, Allen said to Benson: "You hayo not 6een ijenson replied: "I'll fix you," and with' that Allen is said to havo jumped over the fence and como to grips, with uen--Bou, who drew a fully-loaded six-chamber-od revolver awl fired two shots at Allen, which went wide. Allen then overpowered Benson, wresting tho r« volvor f™" l h,m and handing it to Constable Hiuilon. A remand until Wednesday was granted. Counsel appearing for abused asked for bail, and said no actual bodilj harm had been intended, as when Benson fired tlile first shot his own wife wits between himself and Allen. SUPERANNUATED RAILWAYMEN. Christchurch, May 26. A meeting of tho Superannuated Railwaymen's Association was held recently to consider a reply from the Minister fop Railways ro concessions being: granted to members of tho association as are granted to members of the railway service in regard to privilege tickets and free passes. It was unanimously decided to obtain signatures of all the supciaunuated railway men throughout tho Dominion to a petition to bo presented to Parliament praying that the concessions asked for bo granted.
empire day at oamaru. Oamaru, May 26. Empiro Day was fittingly celebrated under tho aegis of the Overseas Club. After salutes of the flag at tho tespectivo schools, tho children assembled in tho Opera House, where they were treated lo a patriotic entertainment, and an appropriate speech by Mr- I ■ ,'4' Souvenir cards wero also distributed. To-night thoro will bo a grand patriotic concert in tho Opera House.
election petition dismissed. Auckland, May 2G. A petition to havo the recent Orahuhu Borough Council elections declared void was heard by Mr. F. V. Eraser,, S.M.. to-<laS'.
