PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MOTION RE PUBLIC SERVANTS. Tho ordinary meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by: the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors List, Cox, Brocklebank, Wright, Anderson, Findlav, Townsend, Jones, and Trueman. 'rhe Railway Department advised that the Gear Company had been written to regarding leaving wagons on tho highway at tho crossing in To Puni Street.— Received.
The same Department stated that in compliance with a request from tho council, a water meter had been put in at the local workshops.—Received. Tho Miramar Borough Council intimated that a conference of local bodies contributing to* tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board would be held 011 May 29 at' the Town Hall, Wellington. Councillor Fiudlny was appointed to attend the conference. Messrs. D. A. Fay and Co. made application for a permit to carry on a iellmongery at "premises situated in Jackson Street extension.—lt was resolved to grant tho permit subject to the approval of the Borough Engineer. Reporting 011 tho question of a boat harbour, the *Mayor stated that the engineer had been instructed to draw up a plan for such a harbour on tho eastern sido of tho wharf. He moved: "i-hat advice be obtained from tho Municipal Association's solicitor as to whether tho Petono Council had power to guarantee maintenance on the matter under reTh» Mayor also stated that he had attended a conference of local bodies interested in tire now pipo bridraj npproaches. Tho matter had* been hold ovct. Some discussion ensued in regard to tlio eastern approach. On tho motion ot Councillor Anderson it was resolved to draw the Wellington City Council s attention to, tho "impossible state of tho Q^Fho a ßorougl U Solicitor advised that tho transfer of a section (for the purpose of ! erecting a pumping station) from Mr. Radford to tho council had been cpm'''inreference to tho Hutt Road crossings, the Automobilo Association sugosted that a, conference bo held botwefsa tho council t and tho association. This was agreed to. Reporting on tli© matter, of compensation for lands acquired by tho council from Mr. M'Ewcn somo time ago, tho Town Clerk reoomraended that tho amount of claim (JJ7S) bo paid -Agreed to. Councillor Tovrnsenil then moved:*— "That the attention of tho Government bo drawn to tho injustice now placed upon boroughs like Petono through the regulations which forbid railway employees and civil servants from taking any active part in local body matters, and request the Government to remove these restrictions, so that these men may take a seat on Borough Councils, etc. — Carr'jV * further motion by Councillor Townsend that a remit of the.i>rovioua motion bo submitted to tho Municipal Conference " Councillor Cox moved :-"Tliat the sum of twenty-five pounds be placed on the estimates for tho purpose of purchasing suitable trees for tho protection of native bush on Domain."—tamed.
