LACROSSE.
[By Goal Umpire.]
THE OPENING OF THE SEASON. Tha 1913 season opened at tho Basin Reserve 011 Saturday last, under a cloudless sky. There was a large muster of players, loth old and new, nnd each team had practically its full complement. Wellington, who for three previous seasons havo been unablo to secure points for the Proud Cup, were victorious, wanning easilv from Kelbur'ne, and Capitol (last season's premiers) upheld thoir title against Columbia. Neither of the games could he classed as good lacrosse; only occasionally were there any- brilliant flashes indicating how the game can "really lw played. If players do not liven up and do some good training, the Auckland-Wellington match, which comes off during August, will to somewhat similar to last year s performanco. . , The game is progressing by leaps and bounds. There aro now four clubs with a full membership, and over 100 lady players, the game having lieen taken, up by the girls' secondary schools. A hint or two could bo given to several players about their method of checking. For instanco, if Canty and Jordan, defence players for Relburne, used a little more science and not so much crosse, they would play a much better game than they aro doing. Also, if Hubbard and Andrews and other players in all tho four clubs played a more open game and did not try to force a way through their opponents' defence, tho game would be much better, Loth from a spectator's nnd player's point of view.
