AMERICAN ATHLETES.

, TO VISIT NEW ZEALAND. Ey Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright (Rec. May 23, 10.10 p.m.) Sydney, May 23. Mr. R. Cooiubes, president of tho Australasian Athletic Association, recently on behalf 'of the New Zealand Association wrote to tho Athletic Association of the United States, inviting it to send a team of athletes to New Zealand and Australia. Mr. Coombes to-day received a cable mossago from the secretary of tho American Association stating that the president of the association had authorised tlie president of tho Pacific Coast Association to organise a team and to make all arrangements in connection with the tour, also stating that Mr. William Unmade had been appointed manager of the team.

That mtuch-talkcd-of event, which appeared so interesting to __ householders, eventuated yesterday at No. 55 Willis Street (opposite Herb Prices). A large crowd of both sexes assembled to take advantage of an unusual opportunity. As tho clock's hands sped onward a constant stream of satisfied people could bp observed, laden with parcels. The most disinterested onlooker could not fail to note tho expression of content pictured on the faces of tlib multitude. The cause of this self-satisfied demeanour was tho outcomo of Messrs. Clark and Co.'s big Auction Sale of Bankrupt Stock and Travellers Samples. The sale opened at 11 a.m. Valuable drapery, clothing, harness, ere., were "knocked down" equally as quickly as the most common article, of everyday use! The auctioneers have been instructed to sell tho whole consignment entirely without Teserve. The only thing troubling them is tho commission. The sale will bo continued to-day at 11 a.m., and bargain seekers would do well to attend early.*
