Sir' Robort Stout (Chief Justice) arrived in Wellington from the south yesterday, and will leavo for Nelson this afternoon.
1 Tho Canadian Trade Commissioner (Mt. W. A. Beddoe) is making a brief visit to Wellington. Mr. W. Nosworthy, member for Ashburton, was in Wellington yesterday. He returned south by; tho ferry steamer last night. Mr. Alex. Burns, sub-editor of tho Christcliurch "Press," is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. Edmund Mitchell, tho American novelist, who was in Wellington a few months ago with the Melies Picture-mak-ing Company (for which he wrote tho scenarios), writes from Los Angeles that ho has arrived homo after an eight months' tour round tho Pacific. Ho states that his now novel, "Tales of Destiny," was published in London in February last.
Mr. Ashley Trevor' Duncan was admittod as a barrister of the Supremo Court yesterday on tho motion of Sir. H. L. Evans (Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers). The Chief Justice was the presiding Judge. Mr. Ernest Partes, tho Wellington baritone, has been engaged by Mr. Meynanl Dakin to tour New Zealand as a member of tho English Pierrots. _ Mr. J. Farrell, representing Mr. J. O. Williamson, arrived in town yesterday to completo arrangements for tho Puss-in-Boots" season.
On the eve of his departure to tako up a position on tho literary staff of the "New Zealand Herald," Mr. E. A. K. Sweney, of tho "New limes literary staff, was made tho recipient ol a presentation by confreres.
Mr. J. H. N. Pedder, of Temuka, who has been appointed Town Clerk of Foxton, was for nine years on tho stair ot tuo Wellington City Council as minute and committee clerk. Ho resigned from the Wellington City Council to take up ft position with the Christchurch City Council under the City Treasurer, and was shortly afterwards transferred to the tho water supply department. Subsequently he was in business as an acoountant at Temuka.
A -private cable messago received from England records the death at Torquay on May 12 of Mrs. Xilias l'arquhar Smith, relict of the late Mr. John Idisha Smith, solicitor, of Wellington, in her seventjeightli year. Mr. Smith, who died somo years ago, ivas at ono time prominent in philanthropic work in tho city.
Mr. .T. Devine, for many years manager of Mr. 1\ Bartholomews mill at Ohau Bush, has received an appointment at Mxunakno (Rolorun), when? no will manage the Mountain Rimu Company s mills.
The "Daily Times" understands that Captain Mounsey, tlio well-known territorial officer at l'almerston, has handed in his resignation to tho Defence Department. Captain Mounsey's reason is that he is unaliie, for business reasons, to devote the timo now necessary to the work.
An interesting visitor to tho petroleum works at, Jloturoa during tho week was Mr. Alfred Featherstono, chairman of tho Chatnia Oilfield Co., Ltd., a British company now drilling in Russia, who has a son in Tarnnnki.
Messrs. R. Krahyen, D. Caselberg, W. H. Jackson, H. Evans, D. Pickering, and H. C. Robinson were yesterday nominated for the threo ordinary va'eancies" on the Masterton Trust Lands Trust. Tho election, in which considerable interest is manifested, takes place on Thursday next.
Lieutenant E. S. Harston, son of Sir. H. L. Harston, of Napier, has been notified that lie lias passed his examination for tho rank of captain.
Captain T. H. llingland, who is connected with the Napier Territorials, has been notified that he has passed the examination for the rank of major.
