LOWER COURT. OFFICER & GRAVE CHARGE. BAIL OF £200. Joseph Houldsworth Smith (represented by Mr. Ncave) was remanded by Mr. W. G. Riddell at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, until May 28, on a charge of committing an indecent act towards a Senior Cadet at the Trentham rifle range. ■ Ba'l was allowed in tho sum of ,£2OO.
SAVAGE HUSBAND. SOME SHOCKING EVIDENCE. . John Leahy, a burly-looking man, with a list of previous convictions, was charged before Mr. W. G. Kiddell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday with having committed an aggravated assault on hia wife. Jean Leahy. Mrs. Leahy appeared in Court, and bore evidence which indicated that tho had been seriously assaulted. Leahy pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Cassidy (in charge of tho Manners Street Police Station) stated that, in conscqucnco of a complaint, he visited a houso in York Street occupied by Leahy. Ho saw Mrs. Leahy standing in a room crying, with her jaw bleeding. She said that her husband had assaulted her because sho would not go on the street as a prostitute.'
Inspector Hendry stated that accused w:is an idle, worthless husband, who lived on the proceeds of his wife's prostitution. His Worship sentenced accused, to six months' imprisonment. TROUBLE■ON A TRAIN. Bartholomew Mahorioy was charged with insobriety, with assaulting one John 'i'hos. Sittauer, and with wilfully damaging a railway carriage window valued at 10s. . Evidence was given to the effect that tho accusod, whilst under tho influence of liquor, had assaulted Sittauer, in a railway carriafjs whilst travelling between Wellington and Upper Hutt.
On tho first charge accused was'fined 20s. On the second charge he was fined 405., and on tho charge of damaging a railway carriage window, ho tfas ordered to pay the valuo of the damage done.
TWO STOWAWAYS. Jean Drummond and Leo Ellen, two foreigners, were remanded until to-day on' charges of travelling on the steamer Moana from Sydney to Wellington without having paid their fare, and with intent to evade payment. INSOBRIETY. For insobriety, Kathleen Stanley was fined_ 4fls., was made the subject of a prohibition order. For similar offences Mary Johnson and Colin Campbell were each fined 20a.
