AUCKLAND TRAGEDY.
HUSBAND'S SAD RETURN HOME.' (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, May 22. A shocking discovery awaited a carpenter named Henry Alexander Fay, on returning from work this evening to his home in Gordon Road, Morningsido, when he found his wifo and 18 months old baby dead, as a result of gas poisoning. Indications pointed to suicido on tho part of the mother.
A statement made to the police' by Fay wis to the effect that he left homo at 7.15 a.m. to proceed to work. His wife, Charlotte, aged 2i years, was then in bed with the child. Both were in good health, and apparently nothing was wrong with Mrs. Fay. On his return at 1.15 p.m. Fay found the kitchen door closed. ' He opened it, and went in, finding his wife, lyiag on hor side on the floor, with tho baby on her left arm. A blanket was spread over the mother and child, 1 who were lying close to the stove with their heads beneath the gas ring, from which gas was escaping. Tho liousa was full of gas. Dr. Dudley was sent for, but could only pronounce that tho lives of both_ were extinct, death having taken place, in his opinion, sis hours previously.
Tho husband of the decensed woman tould ascribe no reason for the tragedy.
