ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
AFFAIR IN A CITY HOTEL. A case'of apparent suicidK was reported to the police yesterday morning. I'. L. Armstrong, late manager of tho Commercial Hotel, Pahiatua, arrived in 'Wellington on Monday evening. Ho went to stay at the Pier Hotel, and was found at 9 o'clock vestorday morning lying on a bed with his throat cut. Deceased, according to police information, was last Feen alive at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, and as his room was locked at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, one of the servants climbed the lire escape and gained access by a window. He found Armstrong in the condition stafc-i. Deceased had written a note to a i'nend, in which ho announced his intention of taking his life. A considerable sum of money was found in tho cloths.
As far as could bo ascertained, Armstrong had resided in tho Dominion for a little over a year. He is a married man, his wife residing in London. * It is not known .whether ho has any relatives in the Dominion. An inquest is t6 bo held at the Magistrate's Court at 0 o'clock this morning.
KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR. Yesterday afternoon an accident occurred to a telegraph boy at the corner of Ellico and Brougham Streets. From the particulars supplied by thd hospital authorities, it seems that the telegraph messenger, Vhose name is W. G. Drummjnd, was crossing the road at the corner mentioned, when a motor-car knocked him down. Medical aid was summoned, and the injured boy was removed to the hospital, where it .was found that either ono or two ribs had been fractured, and his head was considerably cut and bmised, Drummond is about 15 years of age, and resides at No. 50 Webb Street. Ho was reported last evening to bo progressing as well as could bo expected. COLLAPSE OF A BRAKE. TERRITORIALS INJURED. (Ey Telegraph;— Press Association.) Wairoa, May 21. Tho Wairoa Territorials returned last evening, after having had a very rpugh time at the Oringi Camp, owing to the execrably bad weather. An accident happened when descending a hill near Mahalca to a wagon carrying supplies. The brake collapsed at a cntical time, and the horses got out of hand. Tho driver, H. Bodley, called toll ose on tlis wagon to jump off, and those who did so escaped with minor injuries. Trooper Fanning was bruised on one leg, Trooper Jj' Moloney bruised on ono hand, Mr. \\. M. Taylor (County Health Inspector) had several broken ribs, Driver Bodley, a broken-knee cap and leg. Th? latter was tho only ono taken to hospital.
CHILD'S HORRIBLE. DEATH. Hamilton, May 21. The tliree-ycar-old child of a settler named Kedin, residing at Walton, lost its life in a peculiar manner., alio mother was making soap. a small fiuantity of caustic soda and water was left in a dipper. Tho little one picked up 'the vessel while playing, and drank a,-quantity with fatal results.
