BOXING.
EVENT SHARPLY TERMINATED.
BY THE REFEREE. ' EEOARTT-BEOMWICH MATCH. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Napier, May .20. The Hawke's Bay Boxing Association had an unfortunate termination to the boxing contest . arrange*' between J. Hegarty and A. Bromwich at tho Princess Theatre, Hastings, last evening, in tho presence of a very largo crowd. Tho match was for a purse of .£SO and expenses. At the commencement of tho . fourth round the referee {Mr. Sampson, of Wellington) declared the contest, "no fight," and disqualified Bromwich. Tho referee, did this in consequence of Bromwich's seconds having thrown in the towel at a time when, in the referee's opinion, the Sydney man was in a fit condition to continue. Up to this stage Hegarty had done all the leading, and his work was so effective that, at the end of the second round, and, again, at tho end of tho third, only the song saved Bromwich from a knock-out. Tno l'imaru lad showed himself the master from the commencement. Time and again hu landed lefts with full force pn tho Sydney ite, and occasionally followed this up by" punishing rights to the body. He seemed much too strong and too quick for Bromwich. who never got a chance to attack. He was badly "rattled" in the second round, and. in the third, spent most of his efforts in ducking and clinching. As the gong sounded to commence the fourth round ono of Bromwich's seconds flung the towel into the ring. ■ . The referee then went up to'Bromwich, who appeared , to bo desirous of continuing, and, immediately afterwards, statedl that his decision was "no fight," and that Bromwich was disqualified, as he was quito fit to continue. The unexpected termination caused great dissatisfaction to those jiresent. Subsequently Mr. Sampson stated to a press representative that, holding the view ho did, it was necessary to protect the public by declaring tho affair void. He stated that, when appealed to. by him, Bromwich was unwilling to go on. Bromwich, on tho other hand, alleges that he was willing.to go 011, and blames his seconds for throwing hipi over. :
JOHNSON V. PALZEK CANCELLED. The match between "Jack" Johnson and "Al" Palzer, which was scheduled to take jilaco in Paris during June, is, according to tho "Sporting Life," for the time boms cancelled. The cause of the rupture was Johnson's failure to put up the agreed forfeit, though he cabled that he ivas doing so, and if. Vionno, the promoter, and Mr. O'fiourke, Palzer's inana-. ger, declared tho negotiations off.
Mr. O'Rourko and Palzer embarked on April G for New York, arid on arriving thoro it wis the former's intention to pursue Johnson with greater vigour and Induce him, if possible, to post his forfeit with an American newspaper. Should Johnson be prevailed upon to do this, the match will bo i re-entered into, and M. Vienne stands, ' ready to stage. the match at the Cirque do Paris the last wook in September next on the same terms and conditions that Johnson and Palzer li\ad agreed upon for the one just cancelled. \ •
