PREPARATIONS AT WANGANUI,

(By Telciraph,—Hpooial Correspondent.) Wanganui, May 20. Efforts aro being made to arrange fol the military veterans, residing in Palmerston North and visiting Wanganui next inontii, to see the battle-cruiser. A meeting of citizens is to be held on Monday evening next, to arrange for - tho entertainment of tlio officers and crew while ashore, if the weather permits tliem to land or (in case they cannot get ashore) it is hoped to be able to send something oil board for tho men.

Hie Maoris aro making arrangements to take part in tho functions and a number of leading chiefs intend to visit tho warship. The captain and officers are to bo invited to tho pa at Putiki, whero tho young Maori peoplo will give a liaka in their honour.

CHILDREN'S OUTING. - (By Tclograpli.—l'reaa Association.) Christchurch, May 20. Twelve hundred children from the south' are having the time of their lives to-day, Tho weather is fine and warm. Tho children visited Lyttelton this morning, and were shown over. the New Zealand by a special detachment of the crew. They were given refreshments and then returned to Christchurch, where tlicy wero taken in hand by the Tramway Board, which gavo theni an outing to Now Brighton. This afternoon they attend a special picture matinee, and then their hosts will take lliora in charge and provide an entertainment in the evening. The New Zealand was lo bo closed to visitors to-morrow, but Captain Hnlsey will receive an Oaniaru contingent to. morrow morning. The children will nrrivo about 9 a.m. and leave Christchurch at 3.40 p.m. Tho children from the Out. ram schools will see tho ship on Thurso (lav morning. The only citizens' function to-day is q smoke ooncert to tho crew this evening.
