A ROYAL MARRIAGE.
KING GOES TO BERLIN. KAISER IN CLEMENT MOOD. By lelegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, Mav 19. Their Majesties King George and" Queen Mary have departed for Berlin, to be present at the marriage of Princess Victoria Louise, daughter of the Kaiser, to Prince Ernest of Cumberland, 'i'licy were farewelled at Victoria Station by the Prince of \\ ales, the Duke of Connauglit, Sir Edward Grey (Secretary of Slate for Foreign Affairs), and others.
Berlin, May 19. Because of the approaching marriage of his daughter, the Kaiser has pardoned Lieutenants Trench and Brandon, and Bertrand Stewart, a solicitor, imprisoned for espionage.
[Brandon and Trench were in 1910 sentenced to four years' imprisonment in a fortress. Stewart (the fairness of whose sentence was very much questioned) was later sentenced to three and a half years' imprisonment.]
PARDONING OF PRISONERS. PRESS OPINIONS. (R-ec. May 20, 11.30 p.m.) London, May 20. The newspapers applaud tho Kaiser's clemency in releasing the prisoners.
Berlin, May 20. Official circles regard the clemency shown as a compliment tho Emperor pays to tho British nation in graceful recognition of King George's presence at the wedding.
The newspapers mostly are silent on the subject. The "Berliner Tageblatt" says that as Brandon, Trench, and Stewart did not belong to the mercenary kind of spies, and have formally satisfied the law, their release will bo received with gratification throughout Germany, especially when King George's visit demonstrates a mutual wisli for friendly AngloGerman relations.
The "Tageblatt Zeitung," while declining to criticise the Kaiser's action, thinks that the release will cause criticism and regret in Germany, and tho public demand for sharp punishment of gentlemen spies will be again' aroused.
