LACROSSE.
At the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon the opening matches for the Proud Cup competition were played before a fair number of enthusiastic followers of the game. Capitol, last year's cup winners, scoured a good viclor.v over Columbia by lit goals to 3, although several of their goafs were the result of ground scrimmages. Columbia, who were handicapped by "the absence of Iwo men, played pluckily, and their defence worked hard against the reinforced Capitol attack. Capitol, hmvever, were, on tlw day's play, the better side, their passing and picking lip being clcaner than that of Columbia. The score at half-time was 5 goals to 1 after which the Columbia attack got possession of Ihe hall more frequently, and scored twi™ as a result of some
